The People's Money. There are nearly four million dollart lying idle in the State Treasury. No, it is not idle. The Allegheny National Hank (Magce's) has SS'JO,H.IS 1'.5 j l arm era and Mechanics' National Hmk, ol Philadelphia, $522,U72.1'J; People a (tank of Philadelphia, (Kemble's) has $127,- Sofi.lO ; and Baily's bank, at fniontown, has #285,000. Millions for the bosses; not one dollar for the people. The Democratic State platform declares: ''The long continued abuses and spoliation of the State I'reasury and the defianco of law by its management make essential a radical reform, so that large funds shall not he accumulated by taxation of the people to he distri huted among the farored depositors of State officials, but that all surplus in excess of the immediate necessities of the State government shall he invested in interest hearing State or federal securities until it may be applied to the extinguishment ol the State debt." After copying the foregoing from the Lancaster I'd :■ nc-'r ttio Ooylcstown /' •noer.it states that in its opinion, long entertained the only way to prevent the "long continued abuses and spolia tion of the State Treasury," is to create an "independent Treasury" system for tho State. Then the State will keep its own money, and there will not he any opportunity for "spoliation.'* Tho truth is, both parties seeui afraid to put the State Treasury entirely out of reach of party influence. It is very convenient, at times, to have a few hundred thou sand of public money in hank, on which contribution can ho laid for political purposes. As long as there is a chance for the people's money to he used in elections, there will he no earnest effort to change tho system of keeping it. The reiinsylvHiilu Democrats, The Democrats at Harrisburg yester day were even more harmonious than the Kepublicaus were some weeks ago. The platform is a forcible document, and relates mainly to State affairs and politics, protesting against notorious and long continued abuses by the Ue publicans, approving Democratic reform under Governor I'attison and .a-kmg for still more in the same direction. The platform is a very good one; the lie publican platform is a very had one ; and independent voters in I'ennsyl vania ought this year to support the Democrats without question or bctila lion.—.V.
