after a very successful term ■ f eight
months. The Intermediate and Primary
departments closed on Wednesday after
noon with exercises similar to those of lat i
year, music, recitations, Ac. The other '
grade* closed on Thursday morning, with '
an unusually Interesting program The ,
concert singing by the sohi is was excel
lent, and among the selections rendered
were "Who is a Patriot," "Hail Friends |
and "Merry Spring lime." Mr Israel
Sternberg of the High Sch el read "Death
of Little Paul," by Chas Dickens, in a
pathetic and touching manner. Walter ,
Lembky in his pleasant and attractive
style recited "At Chickamauga,' and wa 1
followed by Blanche Fauble who told the (
story of "The Close Fisted Economist '
Miss Luis Harper a'*iated by Mis Lillie
Aikens and Prof. Meyer sang a very l>eau
tiful selection entitled "(Inly a Pansy
Blossom.'' Willie Ke'ler recited "A Scene
from Marmion,' Maurice Swartz. "What
Constitutes a State ?" Harvey Wetzel a
patriot selection and Louis Guggenheimer
"Hearts of Gold," all of which were given
in a manner highly creditable, and well
worthy ef the applause bestowed.
The choir was comfajsed of members
of the different schools, and owing to the
fact that all were working hard at leons,
with examination week just ahead, very
tittle time was given to music. In the
"Bird Carol" one of their selections, tho
boys whistled an accompaniment and this
was generally liked by all. Miss Lillie
Aikens presided at tho organ.
—An exchange says: Parents can do
nothing better than to place in tho hands
of their children good newspapers. The
newspaper has become tho great and mas
ter educator of our times, and where chil
dren are given advantage of this agency
they will fit themselves for usefulness and
position in society. In a minute of con
versation with children you can tell the
one that reads the newspapera from tho
one that does not. Tho child that reads
the newspapers is posted in the matter of
fact and concern* of the day, has a mind
disciplined and trained, while the child
that reads no newspaper stands by and Is
overawed with the one that reads. Give
your children the newspapers to read, and
encourage them in reading them, and as
parents the pey will be tenfold.
