Men, brethren, soldiers of the Grand Army, aud all men, we greet you, we welcome vu to God's house this day to join this angelic chorus "Glory to God in the highest, and n earth peace, good will toward men." God's glory ranks everything in heaven and on earth. "The material universe pro claims liis glory. ' "I he heavens de clare the glory of God." "Man s chief end is to glorify ri|." It was an obscure event. lie was born in a stable, laid in a manger. The news came from In awn, proclaimed by angels. The star glitters over him, the Magi come and w >rship him : "Wl.u I* ll* In } n.Ur aUII. At wlime f-Pt th* ••*•- • III) * It i* tin* L*rl, t w '!• "tory ' It tlt* b id. tli ♦* Km* tf tftorjr. At bi ("*t. now l**t ua fail Crown hmi, CrvWD him l*unt of •II." This one event has brought "Cilory to God it the highest" heaven. It has proclaimed "peace on earth, good will toward men." He lived in obscurity, only one flash of his glory in thirty years, then heaven opeqed, the spirit rested upon Him. "lie healed the sick stilled the tempest, raised the d< ad, ca-t out dev ils He made the dumb to sing, and praise the God of I-rael." They re jected him, they persecuted him, they condemned him, they crucified him." "lie was buried." "He rose again." "He ascended up to heaven." He sat down on the right hand of God." He sent his spirit as a tongue of tire. lie sat i)(Min each of them. "They w-re all tilled with the Holy Ghost." Tie y began to preach Christ crucified. M en's hearts were melted, and In! "four-hundred million" worship Chri-t this day. It has swept around the globe. It has come even to us, let uv give "Glory to God." I)e it seem strange (to you ) that my theme t >-dav should b|< i si's glory "peace on earth, good will toward men?" No, surely on this natal day of "the Priuce of peace." It proelaim ed [K*ace, but it brought war. It brought persecution. It brought death, and so it has ever been. Con flict, war, death. What i- the aim aud eud of all legitimate warfare? It i 'peace," and though paradox!, ul, i: is "good will toward men." No con flict, no victory, "no cross 110 cr twn" no suffering, no true peace. It is the saddest fact "in the annals of time," that hitherto liberty, righti u-ne •> and peace have la-en purchased at tin price of human blood. That man must suffer aud die or forego lih.-itv, righteousness and fs-ace. It was at such a price that our forefathers pur chased this (our inestimable itiheri tance. This broad continent, th>--e fertile valhy ,'hcsesiiow capped moun tain-, with itieir untold wealth nfci-al, of lead, of iron, of silver nod of gold. This was the price." The Mishl the life was (he price thev paid for the-e material b'essings. How much grcai er are "life liberty anil the p--r-nit of happiness?" And how much great er still is "l.herty to worship God ?" tio far the price has been war, suffering and death. This was the price they paid for these o|cn Bdiles, tlo-se free sanctuaries, the*e hymns of praise, i>ur free schools and for the"glorious gi#|M.| of the blessed God." Hitherto such has been the price, hut the end was peace. From the battle of Marathon to that of Gettysburg, it has been one long tremendous struggle, often unwit tingly, to assert tins liberty, to secure these blessings. Blood, human blond, has been the price of human liberty of "peace on earth," and blood, pure, sin less human blood was the price that God paid for our redemption, for "peace with God," for heaven and eternal life, yes, the son of God was horn to bring peace to this earth. But to purchase it "he shed his precious blood." We therefore hail you, sol diers in a righteous cause,as under God the assertors of our "liberties," you, perhaps have had to shed human .blorai, to assert these liberties, to se cure this peace. But you offered vour own hlood.you ventured your own lives. How much we owe you! How much vour country! How much human liberty! How much the generations of men to the eud of time ! Under God, you were the bulwark, the defence the "Palladium" of your countries liber ties, you have offered all that men can give, your very lives. This is the cli max of human nobility, of human he roiam. This was one link in the chain of God's providence, to secure "peace on caith and good will toward men," accept then ail we have to give, ottr heartfelt our everlasting gratitude, this day. Nor do we admire vnu less this day, that you have laid aside the sword and are now cultivating the 11 tsings of "peace and good will toward men," toward the jxwr, the fatherless, and the widows, yes, this is the end, these the legitimate fruits of just and righteous warfare. On these heaven bus set the seal of its approba tion. Nor do we admire less your choice of a tniine. '1 ho name of Dr. George L. I'oltcr is endeared to all who ku w him. He was a true man, a perfect gentleman, u rare physician, a philan thropist. What a blessing lie was to hundreds of suffering men, w men and children. His heart ever responded to the cry for help, nor was there one gruin of merceiinriness in his whole composition. "The blessings of the poor, and those reaoy to perish,' have fallen on his noble head, and on his nobler In art, you have chosen wisely and well, such men deserve "to he Imd in everlasting remembrance." "Kcipiiescat ill pace," may ho rest in |K-acc. V.-s. brave men, you have "stood together" ill the face of battle and of death, where "ensanguined war" drove her cruel car over the dead and the lying to pun huse this peace, and God has spared you to see this natal day of "the Prince of pence." to join in the ret rain of God's angels, "Glory to God hi the highest, on earth peace good will toward melt." We rejoice that you have caught si mcthing of its spirit, may God bless vou, and make you as victorious in peace as he made you in wnr : for it was God alone who gave you the vic tory. And, now, may the triumph of peace go on till weshull know no north, no south, no ea-t, no west, hut one united, happy people. May this he the aim nud this the reward of every citizen,"peace on earth, and good will toward men." Let u- rccieve this heaven sent me* sage.
