A Destructive Fire Among the Docks of New York City. New York, November 6. —A very destructive fire occurred iu Hobokeu afternoou, totally destroying what was known as Eagle dock, owned by the Hoboken dock company, of Ham burg, and leased by the Eagle steam ship companies, also two full cargoes of merchandise, one just unloaded from the Wilson line steamer Rial to, plying between Hoboken and Hull. England, the other in readiness fur a National Hue steamer to sail In a few for London and Liverpool. Most of the merchandise, including a large tjunutity of steel rails ami cotton was owned by New York merchants. The dock is fully insured. It was con structed two years ago at a cost of $250,000. Several cargoes and light ers lying in close proxiiuily to the fire were destroyed, flie steamship Rial to had a uarrow escape and but for the arrival of a tug would have becu destroyed. Her rigging caught fire iu several places. She was hauled into the stream ami auchnred. The excursion steamer Plymouth Ruck, iu % winter quarters in the vicinity, caught fire in several places, but was extin guished, and she escaped with trilling mjury. The origin of the fire is attributed j to the drippings from an oil torch used by a watchman to light the dock. Owing to ill feeling between the Ho boken firemen ami the city authorities on account of a failure of the latter to furnish supplies, the fire department did not turnout until the mayor had given them certain guarantees. They reached the fire an hour after it star- ; ted. Iu the meantime the New York and Jersey City department had re sponds d to an appeal from the mayor of Hoi okeu for aid. £lght Huudretl Marriageable Girls * Wanted. Woodstock Di'pnt b b> U>. Chtcaco Triboao. In order to accommodate the eight hundred bachelors who are said to be under the care of a single Presbyteri an Superintendent of Missions in Man itoba and the Northwest, the editor of the Woodstock, Connecticut, ijentinal proposes, with all seriousness, to get up a huge excursion of marriageable girls from Ontario to proceed early next spring to the prairie province. The enterprise is to be under proper and rmpuUHible management. '1 he editor goes on to say there should not , be much difficulty in securing the re- ! ' quisite number of volunteers for a re ally patriotic expedition of the kind. If any humanitarian feels interested in this scheme for the alleviation of the loneliuess of the eight hundred or phans, he is invited to correspond with the yffice of the Sentinel. To that end applications will he reoeived until the Ist of April next at the office. Ralsiag Hair by the Crop. From a Pari* Fnhioa Lrtt.r. Thousands of girls in Switzerland, Germany aud Norway devote tbem | selves to the cultivation of their hair ' as resolutely as a farmer does his r crops. Once a year the merchant, very often an old woman, arrives in the village aud a brisk trade is car | ried on. The Swiss girls make the t most, as nature has bestowed on them an abundant crop of the blonde color, ! which is hardest of all to obtain, and I the climate is evidently propitious to its growth. The price obtained de pends upon the length of the redund ant tresses. Hair eight inchea long ia worth twenty-five cents an ounce, while that thirty-six inches in length will bring the fortunate possessor $8 an ounce, and in cases of exceptional beauty and thickness even $35 an ounce may be realized. Progress of the Mo4ses. P Fron tb. WntCkOTter (Pa.) Bnrertl. It is a curious and interesting fact that the remnant of the band of Mo doc Indians, now established in the Indian Territory, has taken very kind ly to the teaching and assistance offer ed them by the Friends. Some of the agents and missionary laborers of this religious body have been laboring among them with great success, and , have actually established a meeting for worship after the Friends' Order, which the Modocs regularly take part in. Last week six of the lads of the tribe arrived in Philadelphia, having left Fort Laramie on Monday to be placed at the Emlen School, an insti tution in Montgomery county con i ducted by the Friends, for the purpose of receiving an education. Billiard Playing Held to be Gambling. In Di a nopolis, Nov. o.—The Bu _ pre me Court baa decided that playing niUiarda or pool, where the loser pars for the games, ia gambling, and the proprietor is liable for keeping a gam bling bouse. The decision is based on the theory that the hire of the ta ble, which is the amount charged for the games, is wagered on the skill of the plavers, and, en considered, there is no difference between that and any other wagering of money. The decis ion is a radical one. Grant aad ('oakling at the Pells.
