    The Pope.
NO LONGER SECURE IN THE VATICAN —EXILE
IN mOSI'ECT.
ROME, October 17. —The pope, iu
his address to the Italian pilgrims at
St. Peter's yesterday, stated that the
deplorable state of aifairs placed be
fore him the alternative of enduring
contiuuul captivity, made harder daily
or of going into exile. He therefore
asked Catholics to watch and pray for
the liberty and independence of the
pope. He concluded by saying that
ho was no longer secure in bis palace;
that he was outraged in his person and
dignity in a thousand ways.
The gravity and earnestness of the
4 pope made a profound iiiyireswion. He
closed his address with his arms raised
to Heaven as though imploring help.
THE ITALIAN PILGRIMS ASSAULTED.
LONDON, Oct. 17.—A dispatch from
Rome to the Time* says: "It is impos
sible to describe the enthusiastic cheers
after the pope gave his benediction on
the occnsion of receiving the Italian
pilgrims at St. Peter's on Sunday.
The pope looked thin, worn and anx
ious. A gang of roughs pelted the
pilgrims when they were leaving the
church of St. Vitale, shouting, "Down
with the 'Vatican !'"
The Mrs. Uarllcld Fund.
WASHINGTON, October 5). —Satur-
day the United States trust company
of New York had registered at the
treasury department $27~>,000 iu four
per cent, bonds in the name of the
company as "trustees for Mrs. Luore
tia R. Garfield and the surviving
children of James A Garfield, deceas
ed," being the amount purchased with
the proceeds of subscriptions to the
Garfield fund. These bonds will yield
an annual ioconte of SII,OOO, and
cannot be paid oft' by the government
uutil the year 1007.
IT has just leaked out that while
Geu. Grant was tavcling in Asia heex-
Sressed a desire to get a shot at a lion,
[ot wishing to expose him to danger
the natives secured a stuffed lion, set
it up in a jungle, aud then took the
illustrious traveler out for a hunt.
When the beast \.as sighted the Gene
ral was all excitement, ami crawling
up to a favorable position began to
blaee away at the animul with no per
ceptible effect. After firing about
twenty shots he hegau to get mad, and
takiug off* his coat, he settled down for
a regular siege. Feariug his wrath
when he discovered the sell, the atteu
dants endeavored to induce him to
give up the attempt to kill the beast,
telling him that it had bore a charm
ed life and that he could not possibly
injure it. He told them to go to
thunder; that he was after blood, and
was going to have it. After a vain
fusilade of half an hour, he arose to
his feet gnashing his teeth with rage,
three his suspender off' his shoulders,
rolled up his sleeves, and grabbed his
riffe by the barrel, so he could use it
as a club. The atteudents again beg
ged him to desist: hut be politely,
though forcibly informed them that
he would have that cuss or leave his
liouored remains strewn promiscuous
ly all through the jungle, and with
a wild cry of, "I'll fight it out on this
lion if it takes all summer,!" he rush
ed upon the beast, and, with a well
directed blow had it over on its side.
Then he chased the native attendants
for six miles, hut, being better ac
quainted with the country, they got
away from him in safety.
According to a estimate made by
the Indianapolis Sentinel, the illness
and burial of the late President in
volved an expenditure of about $347,-
000. Of that sum $247,000 were spent
at Cleveland and SIOO,OOO during the
patient's struggle lor life. Mr. Gar
field's private secretary, Mr. Brown,
kept the run of things until the fatal
termination. He says that the doc
tors' bills probably will prove to be
s•'*3,ooo and that the average daily ex
pense approximated $1,250. The sick
bed expenses, as Mr. Brown thinks,
will be borne by Congress and there
seems to be a settled conclusion that
the $247,000 incurred at Cleveland
are to come out of the Ohio State
Treasury and the Cleveland people.
The decorations in Cleveland cost
$103,000; the accommodations, SIOO,-
000 ; the arches, $5,000 ; the catafal
que, $3,000 ; the music, $2,000, and so
on. The transportation of the remains
from Elberon to Ohio was the work of
the Pennsylvania Company, which, it
is understood, will make no charge.
Accompanying the estimate of the
ticli bed and funeral expenses is a
statement that Mrs. Garfield is likely
to receive a pension of at least $3,000
a year, which will make her income
about $15,000.

dog, which could alwavs distingush
between a vagabond and a respectable
person. Jones—Well, what became
of him? Smith—Oh! I was obliged
