—Mr. Jeremiah Furey, of Kansas, who
has been visiting his many friends and
relatives in Centre county, returned to bis
western borne on Tuesday last.
—Our young friend, ('. K. Hoy, formerly
of Tusseyville, on his way West, called on
the DEMOCRAT last week. He intends
locating in Will county, Illinois.
—When you are in Bellefonte call and
examine the clothing at tho Philadelphia
Branch store, on Allegheny street. For

—Tho chairman of tho State Sunday
school association of Pennsylvania an
nounces that the annual convention of the
association will bo held in Johnstown'
commencing October 18, and continuing
in session three days.
—Charley Nelson, of Philipsburg, aged
lft, while playing with a pistol which he
has been in tho habit of carrying, acci- !
dentally discharged the weapon the other
morning, the ball entering almost imme
diately above his heart. Fortunately it I
struck a rib and was directed in an up- ,
ward direction. It is believed the boy will
recover.
—The State Convention of the Young
Men's Christian Association is omitted
this yoar, and instead the association will
meet in three sections of the State. The
central, which includes Tioga, Lycoming,
Centre, Clinton, Bradford, etc., will be
held at Bellefonte, September 22d fo the
2oth, inclusive. T. B Patton, of Al
toona, is acting State Secretary in the
absence of 8. A. Taggart, who is in Eu
rope.
—Judge F.lwcll, of Columbia county,
has recently delivered an opinion that
school boards cannot adopt text books un
til after the election of the teachers, and
that to make an adoption legal the teach
ers must he notified and be present at the
meeting at which such adoption is made.
There has been a good deal of looseness in
such matters heretofore, and now that the
law has been laid down by so competent a
Judge, directors will do well to carry out
its provisions.
—While Mr. John McCoy and wife of
Beccaria township, Clearfield county, were
driving home a few evenings ago from a
visit to a sick neighbor some portion of the
harness broke. Mr. McCoy jumped out of
the buggy but slipped and fell, his head
striking a stone. When he recovered from
the brief stupor produced by the blow the
horse and buggy were gone, but by the
roadside be was horrified to find the dead
body of his wife, who had either jumped
out or been thrown out.
—Postmaster General Jamo* ban, It la
aaid, devised a plan for tending imall
sum* of money through the mail at a
cheap rate. Tho device consist* of a card
having three column* representing dollar*
tent and cenU, and the amount to be drawn
la designated by punching out figure*.
Two denomination* will be isaued, one for
all turns within $2 60, and the other for alj
sums within $6. The orders will be pay
able to bearer, and the post-office will not
be responsible for their safe delivery any
more than for fractional currency, for
which they are a substitute. The orders
will be finely printed on bank-note paper.
The postmaster will tell the |2.60 card
for two or three cents premium, and will
himself punch out the amount paid and
the buyer will simply enclose the card in
hit letter, and the receiver can cash it at
any office. The postmaster will enter the
amountjon a stub, which will be the only
check the department will need, as the
name of the sender and payee are not en
tered. In order to prevent the use of the
postal order as carrency they are redeem
able only three months from the date of
issue.

Centre county met at Bellefonte on Tue*.
day, August 9, IHBI, and wan called to
order at two o'clock, V. M., by Hon. P.
(J ray Meek, Chairman of tho County Com.
mittce. With a few preliminary remarks
Mr. Meek announced that lie was ready
to receivo a motion for Chairman of tho
Convention.
On motion of William Hamilton, Hon.
J. N, Casaanova, of l'bilipaburg, was
unanimously elected chairman. On taking
the chair, Mr. Cussanova, in a brief
speech, thanked tho convention for tho
honor conferred upon him. J. W. Mor
rison, D. F. Fortney and C. K. Essington
were elected secretaries.

us that rain we have been looking for so
long, and we are all rejoicing accordingly.
The great Convention is over and that is
another cause of rejoicing. For the |>ast
month we have been loved to death with
tho hungry office seeker* ever ready to
serve the dear people.
The masons are busy putting up the
wall for I. J. Grenoble's summer resort
hotel.
Workmen are now excavating the cel
lar for Robert Duncan's new store room
and the mason# have commenced putting
up the wall.
Rev. James Wibon, D. D , of New York
City, son of Peter Wilon, (s now rusticat
ing at his father's. On the 21st inst., he
will hold communion services for the
Pr*bytorian* at Spring Mill*. Mr. Wil
son is a very popular preacher, and hi#
yearly visit# to hi# native place are
anxiously looked forward to by bis old
friend# and neighbors, who know that
they will always be treated with one
or two good sermons.
Prof. Bitner's select school ha* a large
attendance of student*. The Profn*or
is a very popular young man, well
liked, especially by the softer sex. Mis*
Maggie Hanna is also teaching a select
school, and ha* a very largo number
of pupil*. Maggie is a very fine and ac
complished young lady, and it seem*
strange that some nice young man ba* not
captured her heart before this. Guess
they are all afraid to try. Prof. Keller is
running tho Penn Hall Aradamy but I
have not heard with what SUCCOM. Prof.
NefT is running a select school or academ
ical Institute at Centre Hall.

ant discovery has been made that the flesh
on black bass teems with worm*. Fish
thus affected have been taker at Towanda
and in the water* of the Susquehanna be
low Ilarrisbnrg. Dr. Robert Horner, of
Gettysburg, examined with a microscope
some bass submitted to him, and found
myriads of worms in the flesh. The inter
est of anglers in this particular kind of
flesh will suffer a relapse. It Is not known
whether the disease is general, but the
fact that flesh thus affected, have been
caught at widely separated points, would
seem to indicate that such Is the case. It
goea without saying that such flth are un
lit for food.

dence of Mr. Thomas Shearer, of Boiling
Springs, was the scene of mirth and pleas
