"MOST FERPECT OF JUVENILE MAGV |
ZINES," is what tho I>etroit Frtt /Vr.tr
calls ST. NICHOLAS. Its growth in Kng
land is keeping pace with its success in
this country, anil the Kogtish papers (
are as unanimous in praise of its beau
ties as the American press. The "won- |
derful Christmas number," just issued,
the first edition of which is 105,000, is a
grandly illustrated Holiday liook of one 1
hundred pages, containing, besides its '
capital Christmas and fairy stories, and
original pictures by the best American '
artists, the first chapters of two splen
did serials—one, a story of the adven i '
turea, in the '.merican tropics, of a '
party engaged in the capture of wild '
animals for a menagerie, and a huuior- 1
ous serial by Kossiter Johnson.
THE JANUARY NUMBER of Sit MINER'S j |
will contain an account of the aims and ,
methods of the new Horological and
Thermometrical Bureau recently estab- |
lished by the Winchester Observatory of |
Yale College, from careful personal in
spection on the spot. This is the first
bureau of the kind established in this
country, and cannot fail to raise the i
standard of excellency in both clock*, i
watches, and thermometers. The curi
ous machinery used to correct w itciie. ,
to the tenth of a second, together with i
some singular facts in the behavior and |
habits of thermometer*, make the arti i
clo of more than usual interest to the i
reader. The same number slso contain* .
some account of Mr. John I.a large'-, i
and Mr F.ouis C. Tiffany's recent work
in stained glass.
SCRIBXIR's MONTH I. r is about to do a
thing perhaps without precedent in our
magazines, namely, reprint a serial
story which has already run through
six numbers of another American mag j
azine.
The serial of Mrs. Burnett, " A Fair
Barbarian," which i* announced for the
"Midwinter Number," is said to be al
together the brightest and mint amus
ing this popular author has ever written.
It will occupy two or three numbers
only of SCWBNER'S, the first installment
covering about twenty three pages. It
has been printed already in six number*
of another magazine, with a large eircu
lation, but with an entirely different
circle of readers.
There is st least one recent Parisian
precedent for such a course as NCRIRNER
has adopted. A novel by a popular
French writer, written the last year or
two, appeared in a prominent daily
paper as a aerial. After this it came
out in book form, and when it had
reached a a!e of some forty or fifty
thousand, one fine morning this very
novel was announced far and wide as
the leading serial of a daily newspaper,
Jjt J'rtU Journal, which, as every one
knows who has read its gigantic sign
on the sides'of the seven story Paris
houses, boasts the unequuled circulation
of 650,000 copies daily.
Mrs. Burnett has revised her story
for its re appearance in >S'RiiiNEa, but
has made no material change in it.
WE HAVE received a book entitled
Houtheastern Kansas, written by a
member of the Chicago press. The
book is neatly gotten up and well
written, containa full map and gives
full and reliable information in regard
to all counties in .Southern and South
eastern Kansas, the more fertile por
tions of the State—with map of each
county. Also valuable information in
regard to the great lead and sine mines
in Southwest Missouri and Southeastern
Kansas. The book is for gratuitous
distribution and may be had free of
postage by addreaing J, E. LOCRWOOD,
Kansas City, Mo. It should be in the
bands of every person going to Kansas.

Familiarity.
' >f nil the source* of bad manners, *e
know of none so prolific nn<l pernicious
as tho license of familiarity. In stnnll
villages and tho neighborhood in which
people call one another by their first or
Christian names, the '•Hilly," the "Jim,"
or "Charlie" or "Frank," or "Mollie" or
"Fannie," of tho young days of school
life, remain the same until they totter
into tho grave from old ago. Now (
there may be a certain amount of good
fellowship and homely friendliness in
this kind of familiar address, but when
it is carried to extremes there is not a
particle ol politeness in it. Itisallvery i
well within a family or a circle of relu |
tives, but when it is carried outside, it
is Intolerable. The courtesies of life are
carried on at arm's length, and not in a
familiar embrace, l ivery gentleman has
a right to the title, at least, of "Mister," '
and every lady that of "Miss or "Mis- |
tress," even when the Christian name is
used. For an ordinary friend to address
a married woman us "Polly" or "Mary"
or "Kate," is to take with her an un
pardonable liberty. It is neither cour
teous nor honorable; in other words,
it is most unmannerly. We have
known remarkable men, living for years
under the blight of their familiarly
used first names—men whose fortunes
would have been made,or greatly mend j
ed by removing to some place where ;
they could have been addressed with
the courtesy due to their worth, and j
been rid forever of the cheapening pro i
cesses of familiarity. How can a man
lift his head under the degradation of j
being called "Frank" or "say Tom," by |
every snob of a boy, man. young and
old, whom he may mPt in the street ?
How can a strong character he carried
when the man who hears it must bow
decently to the name of "Hilly-?"
This is not a matter that we have
taken up to sport with. We approach
it and regard it with all seriousness, for
this feeling and exhibition of familiarity
lie at the basis of the worst manner* of j
the American people. We are not ask
ing, specially, for reverence for age or !
for high position, but f>r manhood and
womanhood. The man ami woman who
have arrived at their majority have a
right to a courteous form of address,
and lie ho withholds it from them, or !
presuming u|>on the intimacies of boy
hood, continues to speak to them us
still boy and girl, is a l>oor. and practic
ally a 100 to good manners.
We suppose the Friends would object
to this statement, but we do not intend ;
to embrace them in this condemnation.
They look at this matter from a differ
ent stand point, on I base their practice
upon certain considerations which have
no recognition in the world around
them. We think they are mistaken, :
hut their courteous way of speaking the 1
whole of the first name i very different
from the familiar use of names and
nicknames of which we complain. !
There is no use in denying that the
fre" and general ue of tirst names,
among men and women, in towns and
neighborhoods, is to the last degree
vulgar. Gentlemen and ladies do not
do it. It is not a habit ol |K>lite society
anywhere.
There is undoubtedly a great deal of
bad manner* in families, growing out ol ,
the license engendered by familiarity— j
bad manners between husband and 1
wife and between parents and children.
Parents are much to blame for permit
ting familiarity to go so far that they do
not uniformly receive, in courteous
i forms, the respect due them from their
1 children as gentlemen and ladies.
>f the degrading familiarity assumed
by conscious inferiors, it is hardly nec
essary to speak. Nothing cures such a
thing a* this but the snub direct, in the !
most pointed and hearty form in which
it can V>e rendered.

Men do pardon anil bear this sort of
i thing altogether too much for their
[ own peace, and the best good of the
j transgressors. The royal art of snub
liing is not sufficiently understood and
practiced by the average American gen
tleman and lady. Considering the credit
our people have for boldness and push,
they yield to the fnmiliar touch and
speech of the low manners around them
altogether too tamely. Kvery gentle
man not only owes it to himself to pre
serve his place and secure the courtesy
that is his right, hut he owes it to socie
ty that every aggressive, had-mar.tiered

Unlit; of Wrong.
Some people have a fashion of con
fusing excellent remedies with the large
1 mass of "patent medicines," and in
i this they are guilty of a wrong. There
, are some advertised remedies fully
worth all that is for them, and
1 one at least we know of—Hop Bitters,
The writer has had occasion to use the
f Hitters in just such a climate as we have
most of the year in Hay City, and has
' always found them to be first class and
e reliable, doing all that is claimed for
