What a Woman of Will Did.
In Ulster county, New York, there is
a woman of real grit who inherited
fourteen years ago a large estate, con
sisting principally of farming property,
heavily encumbered with debt. It was
the old homestead and she could not
bear the idea of seeing it pass into the
hands of strangers, and was determined
that it should not. Although then
only twenty-four years old, and with
no more practical knowledge of life
than an ordinary country lass, she as
sumed sole charge of the estate, de
termined to clear it of debt. Having
an old mother sixty-two years of age, a
half sister, also helpless from old age,
the two orphan children of a deceased
brother, and a brother in the last stages
of consumption to provide for, this
made her task doubly hard. A little
experience taught her that it was im
possible to support her large family and
keep up interest arising from the heavy
indebtedness of the estate from resour
ces of the farm. She decided upon
school teaching. She was engaged to
teach in her own neighborhood at $8
per month, and her salary iu a short
time was raised to S4O per month. She
has continued school teaching ever
since, directing the work of her farm,
and during the summer vacations going
into the harvest fields with the farm
hands to pitch on hay, rake, bind, Ac.
She has earned from teaching school
over $3,500, paid off the debt of the
" old homestead, and greatly improved
the property. She has been an exten
sive stock raiser. Her wheat crop aver
aged this year forty-two bushels to Ibe
acre, the largest yield in the county.
A short time ago she learned that a
brother-in-law living in Pennsylvania,
was in destitute circumstances. She
went to him and found him helpless
from an incurable disease, with a family
depending upon him. " Ren," she said,
" what can I do for you?" "Nothing,
Libbie," was the reply. " You have
your hands full already. We will have
to go to the county house, I suppose.''
" Never, Ren, as long as 1 live. Come
and enjoy the comforts of the old
homestead with me. 1 will keep you
and your family as long as you live."
She says she has enough to do now
without having to support a husband
too, which she might have to do if she
were to marry.

Discovery of a Letter of Jefferson.
Mrs. Mary J. Holmes, during a recent
visit to Paris, discovered one of Thomas
Jefferson's letters in the manuscript
department of the " Bibliotheque Na
tionsle." The letter was dated Annap
olis, December 5, 1783, and was written
to M. de Marbois, Secretary of the
French Legation at Philadelphia. Mr.
Jefferson's daughter was then at school
in New York. Writing of bis daugh
ter he said: "The plan of reading
which 1 formed for her is considerably
different from what I think would be
most proper for her sex in any other
country than America. I am obliged
in it to extend my views beyond her
self ar.d consider her as possibly at the
head of a little family of her own The
chances that in marriage she will draw
a blockhead 1 calculate at about four
teen to one, and, of course, that the
education of her family will probably
rest on her own ideas and direction
without assistance."
A special from Cairo, Illinois, states
that the construction train ran over a
cow Saturday night near New Grand
Chain and was wrecked. Lewis Wash
ington, a colored person, was killed and
five other men were injured..
Our Mission School.
Only It lllttf handful, wt< gathered ttium in the .tract,
Children with hnula uncovered nrtd children with oak
•d feel.
Children whose eyes looked hungry, anil children who
shook with cold,
Children whoso little farce were wonted, end white
and old.
Only a little building, twelve by twelve at the most,
With live utipslnted hem hen mid a cra/y choir t#
boujtt;
Two windows, otic to the wont war J look* at the netting
sun,
Pouring hin lont beam* through it just when our
school In dour.
Thereon the Snhboth evening, litany a month we're
diet.
There In that golden gleaming you'll find un gathered
yet,
Sweetly the voire# ling mid brightly the fores nhi tie,
And the golden sunlight tourhes with a light divine.
And on we hear tloyin ninging nngnof o Savior's love.
We think of tho coming Sabbath in heavenly mints
uletve.
Till looking along the vlnta of those eternal years,
IMm are our eyes with gludnenn and the joy that
touches team.
Tinn't the children's faren we see ill the shilling
gleam.
Tinn't the roughened Ixuiches, 'tinn't the dingy room ;
.lust for a moment brightly cometh a visioh sweet
Of a hont of shilling angels, treading a golden street,
Rearing seals on their foreheads, clad in garments of
snow—
Wearing no trace of sorrow, met and vanquished he
low—
Yet the glorified fat es, seen in that vision bright,
Strangely resemble those lifted to ours to-night.
Then in tender reverence, bidding in closer clasp,
Little fingers that tighten round ours in childish grasp.
Looking down oil faces, watching our owu the while,
('hanging with ours to saduess, brightening with ours
to smile.
We think of those little children as heirs of a home
above,
Dleaseti with a Father's blessing, loved with a Sav
ior's love,
Treading the earth in sorrow, hut bound for the letter
hornw.
Where hunger, and want, and sicklies# and trinl never
come.
What if the little building to them in tin* wicket gate,
leading away from danger into the pathway stiaight.
Something holy and Joyous, surely, our work must he.
Reaching beyond the present Into eternity.
Then in the grand to-morrow, looking hark if we may
Into the lif.. and labor, living nu earth to-day ;
Truly I think remembrance, holy ami pure and sweet.
Will hallow the dim old roolil where we and the
children meet.
There was turned out from the Grant
locomotive works, in Patterson, N. J.,
on Saturday, a new locomotive of pecu
liar construction, intended for the
Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago
Railroad. Eugene Fontaine, the invent
or, claims that this locomotive can be
made to go ninety miles an hour, while
the machinery is run no (aster than
that of an ordinary locomotive traveling
at the rate of sixty miles an hour. The
machinery is all on top of the boiler
instead of under it.
The total receipts of the Pittsburg ex
position were SB6,<X)O. The expendi
tu.es were $96,000, the extraordinary
expense being occasioned by making
permanent improvements.
On Thursday evening Jacob Mohn, a
Pennsylvania Railroad brakeman, was
struck by an overhead bridge, near
Mountville, knocked off the cars and
instantly killed. He was about thirty
eight years of age, and leaves a wife aud
six children.
