Dry Weather.
The following record will he rend with
interest, aa this season will he placed in
the list of dry ones, especially along the
branches of the Susquehanna. It is a
selfish consolation to know that our
.fathers, grandfathers and great grand
fathers, with their wives and little ones,
ns well as their neighbors, experienced
the same inconveniences :

It will be seen that the longest
drought that ever occurred in America
was in the summer of 1762. No rain
fell from the first of May to the first of
September, making 123 days without
rain. Many of the inhabitants sent to
England for hay and grain.
These statistics are gathered from a
city print, giving a general estimate
throughout the country, making the
former droughts more serious in their
results in proportion to the people ef
fected and extent of the country sutler*
ing for want of rain.
A Frightful Railroad Arciilent.
AI.TOOXA, Pa., November 7. —A freight
train coming down the mountain early
this morning broke in two about eight
miles west of Altoona. The latter part
of the train, going at the Tate of a mile
a minute, caught the first part at Kit
tanning Point, causing the complete
wreck of twenty-four cars and scatter
ing merchandise of all kinds in every
direction. One brakenfan named .1. C.
(look, was taken out of the wreck se
riously injured, and is not expected to
recover. Another brakeman, named
•Fas. A. McDowell, was dead when taken
out. He was terribly crushed and mu
tilated. No other persons were injured.
