    The Custom of Shaving.
The custom of shaving (lie hoard was
enforced by Alexander of Muccdoii, not
for tliesake of fashion, but for a iirac i
cal end. lie knew that the soldiers in
India, when they encountered tiieir
foes, had the habit of grasping them by
the board, and HO he ordered his soldiers
to shave. Alterward shaving w* |>rao
ticed in the Macedonian army, and -lu-a
among citizen*. The Romans initial d
the (ireeks in the praolico, as they d.d
in many other tilings, mid spread it o
the different European nations yet bar
baric. In the middle ages, at the time
of the Renaissance, shaving was intro
duced, and the habit was retnino I,
though classicisms gave place to roman
ticism, and that, in its turn, was replac
ed by realism. The beard was a source
of trouble to I'eter the Great, who,
simultaneously with the introduction of
his great reforms in Russia, tried to in
duce his peoplo to imitate the shaving
nations. This innovation was .resisted
by his subjects with the utmost persist
ence, and they preferred to pay a heavy
tine rather than sutler disfigurement,
as they believed, of the image of God.
To the Russians of olden times the
beard was a symbol of liberty. In sev
eral countries of Western Europe and -
in the United States the beard was re- j
stored to honor only about twenty years
ago, and even yet the majority of men
respect the custom introduced by Alex- |
under the Great.

Tux DXATII-RATE or— Our Country is
getting to he fearfully nUrming, the aver
ago of life being lessened every rear, with
out any reasonable cause, death resulting
generally from the most insignificant ori
gin. At this season of the year especially,
a cold is such a common thing that in the
hurry of every day life we are apt to over
look the dangers attending it and often
find too late, that a Fever or Lung trouble
has already set in. Thousands lose th- ir
lives in this way overy winUw, while had
Boachte'a Urrmau Syrnp been taken, a cure
would have resulted, and a large bill fr-m
a Doctor been avoided. For all diseases
the Throat and Lungs, Hutshre't (Jtrmnn
Syrup has proven itself t> be the greatest
discovery of its kiml in medicine. Kvcry

As THiw is the season when chls are
most likely to be taken, a word of advice
to our reader* would be in season : Fir t,
then, keep your feet dry ; wear flannel next
your skin ; do not sit or stand in drnughu
of air, and upon the first symptom of a
cold or a cough call at Green's Drug Store,
in Bush House Block, and procure a bottle
of his "Compound Syrup of Tar, Honey
and Bloodroot," whieb will give you
almost instant relief. It is a plfttant and
rjfretual preparation, containing the virtues
of Tar combined with some of the bet
rrpertornni* and nnotfynt*, allaying all
those distressing symptoms which if not
promptly arrested will too frequently re
sult tn that fatal disease, Consumption.

SOI WW REASONS
Why we can undersell any exclusive Clothing
Store in Centre county.
Reasons which if carefully weighed will convince
any one with average common sense:
Jur.it IVe (luil hi nil classes of general merchandise, including DRY GOODS,
Clothing, Boots and Shoes, Groceries, Queensware, Notions, Carpets,
Hats and Caps, and everything generally kept in a well regulated Country Store.
Second We keep the laryest and /test assorted stock, in styles and qualities, of Men's,
Youth's and Childrens' Clothing in Centre county.
Hard— l' rom the two foreyoiny reasons any one can easily see our maintenance d<xs
not depend upon the large jirofits that must he made on a suit of clofjiing by any exclusive
clothing store, and consequently we can afford to sell at a smaller profit than any of them.
And since we can a [lord it we are willing to give our custom/as the bine fit of the same.

feel justified in mying that our
]in ent Stock eon not he excelled
cither in regard to I ariety, (Quali
ty of I'riec, anil tee doubt if it if
rgual'd in cither of these rcxjcecU
by any house in Centre county.
There are too many leading ar
ticle* in our stork to make sjitcial
mention of them all, but rail atten
tion directly to a fur items that are
nou being sought after every day.
Mackerel are if good quality this
season and are selling rather faster
than usual at this season of the
year. lIV hare been selling noth
ing but full weights—.7o Urt. of fish
in each quarter barrel and 100 !!>*.
rn each half barrel. They hare
better value, for the money than
short weights.
hake Herring and White Fish
are very fine this season and tell
ing freely.
Our Sugar-(\ired Hams, 1 tried
lleef, llrral fas* Bacon and Chect
are all lcorthy of sjirrial mention.
Oranges and l/cmon* are very
fine and the price low enough to
to bring them into every day use.
Hut the price on these goods will
be much higher in a short time.
Our Mmt Market, next door to
our (7ropery room, is always well
supplied with the ehoieeA meats.
He kill the best lleef. Mutton and
Veal that ran he found; dressed
in first-class style and srrrrd to
etiAfomer* in the neatest, clranrst
manner fnssihle.
A'o house in the (grocery and
J'rorision business in Jlcllejonte is
prejmrrd to supply all the urmls of
the family so well as we ran do at
present.
