On Wednesday afternoon in the city
of Pittsburgh as an old man named
John W. llamm> 1 was standing on a

• house on Penn avenue, John Wilkinson,
a member of the tire department, came
along with a couple ot friends. Wilson
remarked with a laugh, "Wouldn't it
be a good joke to knock tho stool from
under the old man." Urged on l>v his

mel fell, fracturing his skull and break
ing four rihs. Hummel is over fit) years
old. Wilkinson was arrested and is
now in jail.
For the first time in the history of
Philadelphia strawberries are to bom en
in the market in March. They crone
t'roin Florida, the first consignment hav
ing been received in the city on Wodnos
day. They were shipped by steamer
from St. Johns river to Savannah, and
there teshipped on a boat lor that port, j
the voyage occupying four days. The
fruit has a fine appearance and fetches i
about $1.50 per epiart. The tropical
fruit season is opening lively. Tho
Ethel A. Merritt, which arrived in port
on Friday, brought three thousand
bunches of bananas and forty thous
and cocoanuts. The schooners Lottie
Byrnes, Hannah Coomer and Addis It.
Warner, are also on their way with large
consignments of the same fruits. The
first cargo of pineapples will arrive i
about two weeks.
Mrs. John Horine, of Anderson coun
ty, Kentucky, a county which has here
tofore been noted for its whiskey, a few
days ago, gave birth to five children at
one time. They are all living and doing
well. This is the third time that Mrs.
Horine has borne children. The first
time she had twins and tho second
triplets. Her husband is a farmer.
Mrs. Horine i not moro than twenty
aeven years old.
At the annual meeting of the stock
holders of the Chicago, Burlington and
railroad on Wednesday last all
the retiring Directors were re-elected
except Robert Hnrns, whose place was
filled by the election of Robert Bangs.
A resolution was adopted asking the
officers to consider whether it is not ad
visable to stop issuing free pa—c ex
cept to employes traveling on the com
pany's business. A resolution was laid
over for future consideration that the
Directors be instructed to suspend all
work on Sunday, except when it is in- |
dispensable that it should bo done.

I o'clock on Wednesday last, by Thomas
Buford, of llenry.onuntry. Judge Elli
oti, had rendered an opinion adverse to
a case Buford hud tor some time in
court. Buford loaded a double barreled
shot-gun and waited for Elliott to come
to dinner, and walked up and shot him
through the heart without warning,

arrested and is now in jail. There is
