ALASKA. AN AI.ARMiNO STATR or AFFAIRS IN SITKA— TUE ANNIHILATION OF Tilt WIIITK CITIZENS THREATENED. VICTORIA, February lfi.—The steam ship California from Sitka, February 10, reports much excitement in Sitka wlit-n she left, the Indians having threatened to annihilate the whites. The citisent are armed and awaiting the attack. Two Indian* who confessed to the murder of James Brown were surrendered to the collector. Three families came down in a steamer, fleeing from danger. Store keepers were preparing to leave by the next steamer. Father Metropolsky ami his congregation, in oor\junction with the American citizens of Sitka, had petitioned the commander of the Brit ish man-of-war at Esquimalt to come to their immediate aid, being fearful that they cannot allay the disturbances be foro the United States government can send assisUmce. The collector of Alaska has telegraphed to Secretary Sherman for aid. The Indians threaten to kill tiro white men in retaliation for the two prisoners. The night before the steamer arrived an alarm was given by some nervous person that the Indians were preparing for an attack and the greatest consternation prevailed among the whites. The peo pla barred their doors and stood reudy for action. The priest's house was crowded with terror stricken women and children who could not be induced to return to their homes until daylight. The steamer's arrival created luoro confidence, but fear had began to gain ground before her departure. The whites are well organized anil in case they cannot conciliate the Indians will make a desperate tight. Browu was murdered in his cabin while asleep, lie was hacked to pieces and his re main* thrown into the ocean. Plunder was the inceutive, much of which was found in the possession of the murder ers. The Western Union Before the Senule Committee on lluilrouds. I'p>m tit# Phllitlrlphlii Rmird. The Western Union Telegraph Com pany presented itself in force on Thurs day before the Senate Committee on ltailromls to prevent if possible the passage of an act authorizing railroad companies to own and operate telegraph lines. The particular subject under consideration was iho bill of Senator Jones, of Fiorida. It contains the same idea embodied in the amendment which General Butler had attached to the jost office appropriation bill in the House, but goes a little further and authorizes railioud companies to connect their lines and the government to use them Inr post, inilitaiv and other purposes. The day's session was devoted to he ir iug President Green, of the Western Union Company, at whose instance the hearing hint been called ami who de sired to make a statement. He claimed that Congress was acting without suffi cient knowledge of the subject and thai the bill would not accomplish what was desired. These two points were the burden of hi* argument, and their ob ject was evidently to secure a delay, lie claimed that the Western Union was not a monopoly, and then went on to prove that it wus by asserting that it owued nineteen out of every twenty telegraph lines along railroads, and hail contracts with these roads which en abled the telegraph company to success fully restrain the railroads from opening up lines that were in direct op|>o*ilion. The funny part of this hearing crops out in the following talk which your cor respondent had with Senator Jones. "Well, Senator, what about tins bear ing before the Bail road Committee on your bill?" "That's all right," replied the Sent tor; "it amuses them and don't trouble me. Let me tell you a little point -. my hill is on the calendar, and by all the parliamentary rules of the Senate it is entirely out of the hands of the com mittee, and the committee cannot get hold of it again or have anything more to do with it without getting new au thority from the Senate. You may fa sure that I know this little point, and I propose to make the most of it when my bill Is reached on the calendar. But I am willing that the Western Union Company should have all the hearings it pleases. What I want is a vote, and 1 think I am in a j-oition to get it," and the Seuatur smiled sweetly as he walked away. Mr*. Gordon on the linttle Field. A dispatch from Boston i* a* follows: There is stronjj reason for the suppos ition that Mr*. She wa* formerly in Dedhatn jail, but was transferred to Kut Cam bridge in Ix7l. During all her impris onment she has persistently maintained her innocence, and reiterated the state ment a few minutes before *he died, t'n one occasion, when she supposed herself alone, she wa* overheard by one of the matrons of the prison praying, and the whole burden of her supplication was that ns God knew her innocence it might be made manifest- On the Sun day before her death, at the service in the prison chapel.
