A Trip to the College.
Mu. EDITORS: —Having seen in your
papier tho announcement of tho play "Oli
vorTwist," at State College, and desiring so
see tho College, I determined to visit it.
Starting on Friday morning, in about two
hours, I reached tho placo after a rather
mtuldy, but very pleasant ride. I stopp *1
at tho hotel, which is kept by Mr. Ueorgu
Hoffer. It was Just one o'clock when, after
having taken tome refreshments, I started
for a trip around the grounds. The first
thing that attracted my attention was the
engine, which pumpii tho wnter from tho
now well t the rosorvoir. Enough water
is pumped up at one time to do tho College
one week. Tho bore was made to the depth
of 176 feet, and the stone, which was taken
out in pieces 8o feet long, was placed in tho
Geology room ofthe College. A substantial
brick building has been erected over the
engine. Pipe* are to be laid along tho
front street to supply the peoplo during tho
warm and dry months. The water is al
ways cool and contains quite n largo
amount of lime. It is slightly dUagrccablo
at first, but I have hoard, a person goon be
come* partial to it.
1 had hoard so much about tho "poor
water" at the college, that I expected to
find something very disagreeable. During
pho last summer the people for miles around
were supplied with water from this place.
It is one of the many advantages that tho
student* and resident* should be thankful
for. Water pipe* have been placed in tho
building, from the basement to the fifth
floor, and many conveniences not often
found outside of ncity, nro enjoyed. By
next winter tho College will be heated by
steam. I next visited the College, where I
spent several hours very agreeably. Prof.
Grabowski very kindly offered hi* service
to mo for tho afternoon. He took great
pains to point out anything that might He
of interest and different improvements.
Among tho different things of interest,
was tho Herbarium and Geology and Phys
ic* room in connection with the OHege,
and the hall* and reading room# ofthe two
societies, Washington and Crcsson. The
halls are very fine and show both taste and
durability. The book* of the Washington
reading room wore especially note-worthy
and showed that the young gentlemen un
derstood the value of reading tho "Gold"
of literature. But time will not allow
mo to spend mora of it here, so I must
pass on. The stables and farm buildings
were in excellent order. The usual dis
agreeable odor generally noticeable about
stable* was entirely absent, although nine
ty head of cattle are now being fattened.
The cattle are in fine condition and have a
happy contented look, although they arc to
he shipped to the Philadelphia markets at
/oon as thoy have acquired a certain weight.
The orchard look* well and from short ac
quaintance, 1 should say, that in a few
year* there will be no place to put the ap
ples.
I was about to visit the reservoir, when
hearing the College bell, 1 looked at my
watch and was surprised to find that it *u
six o'clock. I had been so interested du
ring tbe afternoon, that I had not noticed
the growing darkness. It was my wish t<>
visit th* Experimental Farm, but as time
did not permit, I hope to be able sometime
in tbe near future to give you some infor
mation about it. As the time for the
evening's entertainment drew near, I
mode arrangement* for it. One hour after
this I found myself seated in a comfortable
chair, in the College Armory, While the
seat* were rapidly being filled, Mr. Ber
nard Lauth and Prof. F. T. Garwood en
tertained those present with some very
fine music. After this the play commenced
and for two and one half hours the audienoe
were delightfully entertained. Frofk. Gra
bowski and Downey performed their part*
to perfection and brought loud applause
from the audience.
Between the act* Mr*. C. M. Comerford
and Mr. Bernard Lauth, of Howard, oc
cupied the time by playing some difficult
music, which wo* well received. At the
close Prof. Downey thanked the party sup
plying the musk: and tho audience for thair
attendance. It was an evening well spent
and all enjoyed themselves. In conclusion
I would say, to all who can visit the Col
lege, Go; and if ever there is an opportu
nity to aee "Oliver Twist" played, go there
also. Yours, C. D.
