Democrat, JUlUjfvnte, I'ettn'u," that other

communications be timely, and be sure that
they are brief and wed //ointed.
Tub liKuci.Aß Axm'ai. Mietinu of the
Centre County Agricultural Society for
the election of officers for the ensuing
j ear will be held in the Court House on
the evening of Monday, the 20th in*t.
We give this timely notice that all
interested may have fill opportunity to
be present nnd take part in the pro
ceedings. _____
Agricultural Editor's Table.
We want every farmer in the county
to take the I'kmhSr.it, and will use our j
best efforts to make its agricultural
columns so completely interesting and
useful that it will, in a measure, preclude
the necessity of a distinctive agricultural
journal. There are, however, many
farnitn in Centre county who, while
the) take a local journal for its local
news, want at least one edited and
published exclusively in the interests of
their business. We know of none which
will better fill the bill tiian the Practical
Parmer, published at 518 Walnut street,
PhiDdelphia. The subscription price
to the Farmer is but $2 yer year, and in
clubs much less than that; and we feel
safe in saying to our farmer Iriend* that
they can make no better investment of
this amount of money. Having read it
carefully and regularly for a number of
years, we speak advisedly. It is pub '
lisbed in Pennsylvania, and. therefore,
peculiarly adapted to the needs of
Pennsylvania farmers. All its depart
menu are carefully conducted. Its
contributors are men of practical expe
rience anil ability. Its letter press is
clear and distinct. The portion of its
space devoted to literary matter and
family reading i* carefully guarded Com i
all impurity, and taking it all in all, we
heartily and cordially commend it.
How Ottn We Make Fansicg Pay ?
In continuation of this subject, ns
promised last week, we present some of
the thoughts and figures of that emi
nently practical farmer, Jossih Has
ris. They are extracts from his essay
on The Prospects of American Agriculture,
as read before the National Agricullur- j
al Congress in 1876 :
Machinery makes us far less de
pendent on the weather than former
ly and better farming also helps us in
the same direction. When I first
went to Rothamstead Mr. I.awes
asked me about my father's farm,
the character of the soil, the rota
tion and yield per acre. "It Is rather
light land," I said, "hut yields good
cro|<s, if the teuton is not too dry.'"
"I suspect,' 1 said Mr. Lawes,"that
your father is not a very good farm
er. There is nothing which a good
farmer dreads so much as a wet.aea
son."
This was a new idea to me. I have
an Knglish foreman, and our climate
is a sore trouble to him. From May
till Novemiicr, be is alwnys wanting
rain. "The mangles nre growing
surprisingly," he said, some weeks
spice, "but another shower of rain
would help them."
"I'erhaps so," I replied; "but as
we cannot get rain when we want it,
let its keep the cultivators going nnd
kill the weeds."
For my part, I like our climate.
But it makes no sort of difference
whether we like it or not. We can
not change it. What we need to do
is to study the climate nnd adapt our
crojw and our methods of cultiva
tion and manuring to it. One thing
tnny lie safely said, that at least
three-fourths of our seasons are very
bud sensons for bad farmers, but
good seasons for good farmers.
Take the barley crops os an illus
tration. In Western New York 20
bushels per acre, weighing 48 lbs.
per bushel, is a good average. It
probably will not average more than
this the present year. And yet we
hare bad rather an nnnsually favor
able season; so favorable indeed,
that the tnaluters expect to get bar
ley at a low figure, say 75 cents (ier
bushel.
Now I feel safe in saying that on
well-drained, well-prepared, and prop
erly enriched soil our climate is ca
llable of giving us nn average yield
of 40 bi shils of barley per acre;
and I th nk the average price of six
rowed barley is fully $1 per bushel.
I have said that 20 bushels is a
fnir average crop; and this is taking
good and had crops together. There
are many crops which yield 80 bush
els, and consequently there must Us
many that are not over 10 bushels.
But wc will take 15 bushels as the
average crop of a rather indifferent
farmer. He sows two bushels, and
• will bo very apt to leave two bushels
on the ground in harvesting the crop,
I nnd so. after deducting seed and
scattering* in harvesting, he lias 11
I bushel* t "fib which at <5 cent* ia
$8.25 per acre
The good farmer has 40 bushels.
IHe sows two bushels, and we will
reckon that he loses two bushels of
scatterings, though a good crop docs
not scatter half as much as a poor
crop. This leaves 3G bushels, which,
at 75c is $27 per acre, over three
times i s touch as from the poor crop;
and this, mark you, is in a good
season.
Now, how is it in what we call a
bad season, thot is, in a season un
favorable for the growth of barley
on ordinary land 1
In such a season we have hund
reds of farmers whose barley crops
will not be over 12 bushels per acre.
Deducting, as before. 2 bushels for
seed and two bushels for r.•titterings,
we have 8 bushels of merchantable
barley, of rather an inferior quality,
weighing perhaps, 40 lbs. to the
bushel.
Owing to the unfavorable season,
barley will be likely to bring $1.50
j per bushel. The net returns from
j such a crop, therefore, w ill be ( S
{ bushels of 10 lbs. at $1.50 |>er bush-
Id of 48 lbs. $11.60) $ 11.50.
The good farmer, on well-drained.
| w ell-prepared and properly enriched
land, will have, say 30 bushels jn-r
acre of 48 lbs. |>er bushel. Deduct
ing 2 bushels for seed and 2 bushels
for scatterings we have for sale 32
bushels at $1.50 |>er bushel, or $lB
per acre.
******
A careless firmer might lore half
the value of the manure by leaching.
But there is no necessity for this.
The elements are in the manure when
it leaves the animal, nnd we shall
learn how to preserve them, and I
feel sure wc shall soon learn how to
make them more immediately availa
ble to our crops. How to get out of
our soil more of the large amount of
dormant elements of plant-food which
it contains, and then when we have got
these elements, bow l>est to use them
and save tlwui should be the great
aim of scientific and practical agri
culturists. 1 know of no better plan
than the one I have suggested :
Ist. Draining and thorough culti
vation. These operations, by letting
in the air and sun, decompose and
disintegrate the organic and inor
ganic element* of plant-food.
2d. To grow such crojm as will
take up the largest proportion of this
plant-food from the soil and subsoil.
"lover, on many soils, is one of the
lost plants for this purpose. I'eaa
and beans, in favorable latitude*, are
also good. Grass and oats are less
valuable for the purpose, but still use
ful, and our grand, national cereal,
Indian corn, can In* used with im
mense advantage. But wc have much
to learn in regard to the peculiar re
quirements aud ures of tins magnifi
cent crop.
3d. After we have taken up and or
ganized into useful, nutritious food
the annual supply of plant-food fur
nished by the soil, we have to study
the best method of extracting this
nutriment nnd turning it into meat,
and at the same time save the ele
ments of plant food in the shape of
manure for future crops.
(if course, in a paper of this kind,
I cannot go into details. The cry ing
necessity of the age is more and bet
ter meat. The belter our education,
the more skillful and intelligent our
population ; the harder wc work with
our brains, the more animal food we
seem to require. Improved animals,
like the Short-horns for instance, re
quire richer food than Texan cattle,
and bright, active, energetic men, as
a rule, require, and w ill have, inure
nutritious and inorc easily digestible
food than the slow, plodding farm
laborer of the past. In all civilized
| countries the demand for animal food
| is increasing much more rapidly than
the supply.
I ***** *
I liclieve there are in farming an
great and n* many opportunities for
"doing goo<i and making money" a*
in any other business of life. Wc arc
apt to think that all the past discov
eries and inventions have leen made.
Wc think that l>akewcll,the Codings,
Oilman, donas Webb, Hammond and
others in the past have so improver!
on cattle and sheep that there is
nothing more for ns to do except to
retain and perpetuate the improve
ment. There cannot be a greater
mistake. Notwithstanding all that
science ami art have done, the pro
duction of flesh, meat and fat is still
a very costly o|eralion. To convert
the carbon of grass and corn into the
carlam of fat and butter wc have at
present to submit to a great loss.
Kvcn with our best breeds of cattle
and sheep, our most experienced
feeders have to submit to a loss of at
least ninety per cent, of the albu
minoids of the food. In other words
if you feed a steer or a sheep a quan
tity of grass and grain containing
100 pounds of nitrogen, you rarely
get in the growth of the animal
consuming the food an amount of
flesh, skin, hair and wool containg 10
lbs. of nitrogen. The other 00 lbs.
are to a large extent used to "nip the
machine." Is there no chance for Im
provement here ? Wo have the ex
perience of the past and the science
of the future to aid us. We have
not to grope our way in the dark as
Bakewell did. We know what we
want and in what direction to look
for It. Depend upon it, wo slml! yet
have forced H of cattle, sheep, swine
and poultry far superior as meat,
milk and wool producers to anything
the world lias yet seen. There are
great opportunities for the young
farmer of the present and the future.
