CJie Centre Democrat. THURSDAY, Oct. 31,186L~ LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. The Relief Fund. It must be a source of great sat isfaction to the poor soldier, who in going forth to te join our grtat Union army, has left behind him a wife and family, to know that'the coming win ter will Dot find them in wast. This satisfaction the volunteer from Centre county, possesses in the highest] degree. No man from this oounty need fear for one moment that his "dear onesat home" are not i mply provided for in his absenee; for kitd hi aits atd patriotic hands are at work at home. Could the soldier but see the group of mothers and wives who gather heie from time to time to draw their weekly allowance, he would feel that while he's fighting for the interests of Centre county, the peuple of Centre county arq watching over his interests at home. Here comes an aged mother. Her only son—upon whom she was dependent—has gona to tight under the same flag that her husband bore aloft in the struggle of 1812. She remembers well the scenes of that pe riod ; she remembers that her husband went forth to battle for the honor of his nation, and when peace again smiled upon the country, he returned to his home to make her happy and eDjoy the con ciouiness of having done his duty as an Amej-i iaa; but ho has gone—fought his last battle—sleeps his last sleep. Her son—tears start at the mention of his name—has gone to fight under the same flag and for the same cause. She bade him go. The struggle was hard; hut his country called and he must obey. She comes for a portion of the fund provided for the relief of just such mothers. She receives it and goes away thanking God, thatsh e is cared fur in the absence of her loved boy, and praying that he may be spared and return to com fort her as she r.ears the tomb. And here comes a lovirg wife. Her husband, who sustained her by the labor of his hands, ha s laid down his hammer aud taken up the musket in defense of his country. She and her two little ones are left for a time, as it were without a hus band and without a father. But he went knowing that they would be provided for. She too, has came for her portion of the fund provided for tho support of a'l such wives. She, too, receives her jnst dues, and goes to hr home thankful that means have been provided far her support. And thus they come one after another and go away with the means to supply their wants. Below wo give a statement ef the allowances Hiade by tho Board of Relief. Wife, $1 00 Wife and one child. 1 75 Wife and two childreD, 2 25 Wife and three childreD, 2 50 Wife aud foir children,. 2 75 Wife and five children, I 00 Wife and six children, S 25 Wife and sevon children, 3 60 Wife and eight ebildren 8 75 Wife and nine children, 4 00 TJ Postmasters- We have a ftw words to say to a certain class of Postmasters, in Centra couuty.— Not to those men who distribute our paper at the proper time and to the proper persons, and who inform ua when a man stops his paper, and thus eaves us trouble and expense ; hut to those who act in a different way. There are Postmasters in this county who do not distribute our paper pro perly, and who permit us to send it to their offi ees for men who have left there long before A friend cal cd at our office the other dty and ask ed to see our list of subscribers at a oertain office >■ the county—we are tempted to gite the Post Master's name, but will withhold it unl ess furth er indignities are offered—we complied with the reqae-t, and onr friend pointed out the names of half a dozen of men, who had moved away last, fepriug, and who neither paid for what they had get nor informed us of their departure, arid their papers continued gcing to their old post office and the worthy and efficient postmaster never informed us that any person had left. We suppose Mr Post- master mast have plenty of waste paper, at our expense. We hope that we will not have oc casion to refer te this mitter ngiin. We "have no doubt that we are now sending many papers to different Post Offices for men who hwe gone to the army. We hope that each Postmaster will at tend to this matter. To Our Army Correspondent home time ago we re ceived a letter from a friend in Captain Boal's company. For some reason it did not reach us for a long time after it was written. It was an account of the accident which resulted in the death of two members of the above named com pany, and a list of the company. As the ac eident had happened so long before we did not publish aDy portion of th letter except the list of the company. The writermußt not think, howev er, that we do not appreciate his kindness. We are glad to hear from him and feel certain that onr readers cannot find any thing more interest ing- 6o send them along Mr. Lieutenant. John H Keatly We learn that our good friend John II Keatley, has associated himself with Jno. Brotherline, in the publication of the Blair county Whig. John is a good writer and a clever fellow, and will make the Whig a good paper. For years we played in the same pudd e, studied (?) in the same books, whittled the same benches, and g>t whipped by the same "master," and now that we are engigel in the same b isiness it is but natural that we ehould wish him success.
