Clje Centre Democrat. THURSDAY, JUNE 27th, 1861 locaiTintelligence. A Man Shot. On last Friday evening at 8 O'CIOGII a boy about 16 years old, named Swab, shot an unknown man, near Black Mosbannon. The circumstances are as fol lows : Mr. Swab, father of the boy, was watching a deer lick in the vicinity and bad placed the boy at a crossing which is fre quented by deer. In a short time alter, the old man heard the report of his son's gun and naturally supposing that he had shot a deer, started down. Upon arriving his son told him that be bad shot a man—that he had mistaken the approaching object for a dear, took deliberate aim and fired, when a man ran toward him a short distance and feUdead. Neighbors were called and the body was removed to an empty house and the boy came to this place and informed the proper officer that he bad killed a man and had came to place himself in custody. He was committed to jail to await a hearing. On Saturday, the coroner, Mr- Eecard went to the place where the accident happened held an inquest and had the body buried. - On his return he furnished us with all the important information. At the time the boy fired the man was eighty yards distant, the shot took ofiVct in the lower part, of the neck severing the main artery. He ran forty six steps, toward the boy and fell dead.— He was very dirty and nothing was found about bis person save a short pipe and a piece of tobacco. No person was able to tell anything concerning his name or history A man answering the description given of the deceased, passed through this place cn Friday. Poor wanderer, he died a horrible death, in a strange land. Public School Pic Nic. On last Friday the Public Schools of this town had a Union Pic Nic, in the beautiful woods on the farm of Mr. Armor about one mile from town.— The children under their respective teachers, Mr. Rankin, Mr. Crosthwaite, Mrs. Ward and Miss Mcßride, went to the grove in the morning, where everything was arranged fo r the pleasure of the liitie folks. During the forenoon the Brass Bird went to the grove and played "Dixie" and other tunes to the great delight of the children. The din ner was then prepared and discussed. Every thing looked clean ar.d tasted good. The children behaved in a manner that spoke well of their teaclrers abili y. They sang several patriotic songs, with a will that pro ved that their teachers are bringing them up in the right way ; their little hearts appear ed to bound and their bright eyes fairly dan ced as they sang the Star Spangled Banner. We could not help but see among them a Washington, a Marion, and a Scott. Let traitors tremble, for the very babes of the North shout F.eedom. The greater portion of day was spent in the woods, after which they returned to town after singing to the tune of Dixie, "We re a band of Yankees," were dismissed, Frightful Ride. On last Thursday, Dr. Hale of Mifflin county, was setting in a two-horse buggy, in lront ot the residence of Mrs. Val entine, corner of Spring and High streets, in this p'aee, the horses took flight and ran away. The lines fell down and became en tangled among the horses feet, leaving the Doctor with no means ofcheoking their speed and the horses proceeded at the top of their speed, without interruption, until they reach ed the "burnt Mill" when they horses be came detached from the vehicle, leaving the Doctor uninjured—saved by his presence of mind and coolness in the time of danger.— lie sat quietly in his seat during the entire ride, a distauee of half a mile, over a rough and dangerous road ; instead of foolishly jumping out to break his liraos or perhaps his neck. Capt. J. Irvin Gregg. After this gen tleman arrived at Camp Curtin, with his company, the Centre Guards, he was desig nated by the CaptaiDs of ten companies about to be formed into a regiment,as their Colonel. A short time after, however, ho received an appointment as a Captain in the regular ser vice, which made it necessary for him to re" eign hiß Colonelcy. The Captain is a great favorite among military men wherever he goes, and we expect to hear a good report of him should he get into a brush with the rebels. The llarrisburg Telegraph speaks in glowing terms of the Captain as a soldier and a gentleman. Organization. On last Saturday "Cassidy's Company" was regularly organized by Lieut. Win. McLelland, actiog Brigade Inspector. The " Union luvincibles" is the name adopt ed and the following are the officers elected on Saturday : Captain, Robt. A. C'assidy ; First Lieutenant, Calvin Wilson ; Second Harry M. Steel, Third, Norman lloover, First Sergeant, Geo. H. Harris, Corporals, Ist J. J. Brisbin ; 2nd W. Grafius ; 3rd A. Morrison; 4th J. Roop. After organization, the company paraded the streets, presenting a respectable appearance. Ice Cream. i\lrs.
