€|e Centre Democrat. THURSDAY, JUNE 20th, 1801 . LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Printers, Beware of Dr. Bort. The peo pl of the country are constantly be'iDg hum bugged by some rascal who passes himself off for a "cure all or charge nothing." The last and greatest of these "bugs'' visited our town this week, the world renowned Dr- Bort. lie advertises himself as able to cure the various diseases of tha eyes, ears and lungs. If we may be allowed to judge of his ability by his conduct, we would pronounce bim able to driok more liquor, and swear more hard Oiths than any man we have seen lately. And certainly a man whose brain it affected by bad liquor is not the person to administer medicine or perform surgical op erations. We would not allow him to give medicine 10 a dog. In the condition which Dr. Bort was several times when we saw him we don't believe he could have distinguished the finest surgical instrument from a broad axe or a box of pills from a half "bushel of eorn. A few weeks ago he sent us five hun dred bills to distribute throughout the CCUD* ty. to advertise his coming. We did so, faith fully, supposing bim to be an honest man The day after his arrival we went to his room two or three times, but no Dr. was there. We took a look around the premises and found him in the saloon taking medicine at the bar, and performing an operation on a bagatelle table. We called turn out, and presented our bill. He was dissatisfied with the amount charged, and we, disposed to be easy, made a liberal deduction, but he still refused to pay, swearing that he would pay no mote than a price he fixed himself. We were not disposed to let a "skinner" impose upon us, and we handed our bill to Esquire Weaver, who "macto out the papeis" and handed them to Corstable Steel who brought the gentleman up to the mark, but as he is not a responsible man he could not be made to pay any more than his own priee. So we had to take what he saw fit to give—we were skinned by Dr. Bort. Returned, Mr. James Wadile a member of the Fenoibleß who was so unfortunate as to have his fingers shot off, has returned borne cn a furlough of thirty days. The accident happened while the company was a York. The company wan practicing Uirgst firing, and were formed in two ranks, the rear rank to fire oyer the shoulders of the men in the front rank. The mc bthind Mr- Waddle •was Mr. Calhoun, Unionville, and he in firing, brought his piece to bear upon the for mer gentleman's left hand, and shot off the two first fingers and badly crippled the third. Jim has a loyal heart, and a strong arm for the defence of his country. He is anxious to get back to camp. Several other members of this company have been sent back lately on account illness. Mr. Wm. Hart, was brought home on Sat urday. lie is suffering from a severe attack of brain fever. Now that he is under a moth ers kind care, hopes are entertained of his recovery. Messrs. Geo, Rigers, Chas. Johnson and Jos. G. Stone, have also been sent back. "Wilson's Store Removed. The Store of the Wilson Brothers has been removed to the Farm School. These gsctlemen have es tablished ah'gh reputa'-ioD, m this place, as merchants and will, no doubt, sustain that reputation in their dealings with the farm ers and laboring men, in the vicinity of the School. They always brirrg up goods of the best quality and sell their, at the most tea scnable prices. We beg leave to recom mend this firm to our up-the eountry readerp. The Union Invincibles.
