    yptal printed. I
THURSDAY, J AN., 3rd 1801.!
BELLEF ONTF, JAN., 2nd 1860.
To my friends, in and out of the church, I
return my sincerest and warmest thanks, for
the substantial tokens of their regards, left
by them at the Methodist Episcopal Parson
age, on last Christmas evening. I should
consider myself as wanting in that feeling
so becoming in those who have been the re
cipients of favor, were I not to notice, in this
manner, the generous gifts conferred upon
myself and family. The refined feeling,
hearty good will, and prompt action, that
characterized the movement throughout, are
worthy of all commendation. These man
ifestations of kindness have a tendency to
create good feeling, and strengthen the ties
already existing, and there is lying back of
these outward manifestations of good will
a fountain of kindness, the streams of which,
to my taste are inexpressibly sweet. It cau
ses a man to think he better of his race, his
nation and his chuich. Though we are now
living in troublesome times, and our nation
al standard is under the cloud, yet the trua
patriot and christian hopes, prays and be
lieves that the cloud will soon pass away,
and this great nation wiil continue to ad
vance, till she has coDsumated the designs
of Divine Providence, and as an humble min
ister of the Priuce of Peace, whose mission
into our world was a mission of "good will
to men and glory to God in the highest," I
for ose will still pray that God may grant
us peace and harmony within the Church,
within the limits of Old Centre and within
the boundaries of this, our dear old Com
monwealth, and protect " our old flag"
throughout the length and breadth of the
great American llepublic. The prayer of
the patriot, of the christian and of all who
love our nation, ought to be
"God bless our Native Land,
Firm may she ever stand,
Through storm and tide."
Again, my dear friends, except my thanks,
and I feel that I cannot better express my
good wishes than to use the language of the
illustrious Paul, " that Christ may dwell in
your hearts bv faith; that ye, being rooted
and grounded in love, may be able to com
prehend, with all saints, what is the length
and breadth, and depth and heigbtb, and to
know the love of Christ, which passeth
knowledge, that ye.might be filled with all
the fullness of God."
THOMAS SHERLOCK.
Our New Volume.
We this week publish the
first number of volume twenty seven. Twen
ty-six years old-1 This is quite a respecta
ble age for a newspaper. It proves, at least,
that the Democrat is none of your humbug
papers which spring up and flourish long
enough to get the money off the pec pie, and
then die out, but a permanent institution. P,
like our Union, has stood many a storm and
can stand many more. It is not to be crush
ed out easily. So long as it is the organ of
a powerful party, and the advocate of cor
rect and glorious principles, we expect it will
be supported, and flourish, diffusing light
and knowledge throughout the land.
We intend to purchase au entirely new cf
fice in a short time. In this, we want the
co-operation of our patrons. If they will aid
us in a pucuniary respect it will lighten our
burdeu considerably, When we get our new
type and press we will he able to give our
patrons one of the neatest and most readable
papers in the State. Let our friends send in
their money and we will do our duty.
A Donation Visit.
On last Christmas even
ing, the friends of Rev. Thos. Sherlock, Pas
tor of the M. E. Chureh, paid the parsonage
a donation visit. At the time of the visit
Mr. Sherlock and his family were at church.
The friends entered the bouse and set out
two tables which they covered with presents
of every kind. A suit of clothes for Mr.
Sherlock, a dress for bis lady, a dress fur
his babe, flour, meat, vegetables, fowls, pre
serves, a purse of money and many other ar
ticles. Toe following' note was left upon one
of the tables;
BELLEFONTE, DEC., 25th 1860.
REV. THOS. SHERLOCK,
Dear Pastor —As a
mark of our high appreciation of your servi
ces, as our Pastor and Preacher, we pray
you to accept the accompanying contribu
tions of
YOUR PEOPLE.
After having arranged every thing in or
der, tbe visitors retired- No doubt, upon
returning to bis house, Mr. Sherlock was
very agreeably surprised to find his house
containing such a large amount of the com
forts and substantial of life.
New Instruments.
The Bellefonteßrass Band
has purchased an entire sett of new instru
ments, manufactured by Allen & Hall, Bos
ton. We think they are the finest looking
instruments we ever saw. They have been
well tried and have proyed to be entirely sat
isfactory to tbe purchasers. This Band,
which has now a good degree of fame as a
musical organization, will now take a new
start. They will give a concert in this place
during the coming court week. The tickets
have been printed and are being sold. Every
body should attend.
We Want Wheat.
Will some of our friends,
who are indebted to us, be kind enough to
send us some wheat. We are in need of it
immediately. We care not how many of our
farmer frieEds pay us in this way. It is the
same to us as cash, and if they would but
think of it we would have wheat all the time.
We hope te receive some immediately.
And Still they Come.
And when we say this
we mean tbe presents from our friends. The
other day Mrs. Comely, of Pleasant Gap,
presented us with a pair of fat chick
ens, which made ua a most delicious dinner.
We are under obligations to the lady for her
kindness.
Thanks.
Our Carrier desires to return his
thanks to those patrons who kindly remem
bered him on New Year's day. By tbe.r
kindness he was enabled to stuff his old
purse to its utmost capacity.
