Hazel had intcrresed between them.
Mr. Kelney then insisted en taking
the witness ever the same ground cov
ered by him before, relating te the fight
and her reputed friendship with "Dec"
Ward, Justice Kallsch regularly re
minding him that it "iad all been gene
ever before and didn't matter anyhow.
Convicts Testify
The first of the five convict te take
the Mand for the defense was Ernest
T,. Mave. servlns a life term for killing
Jonas K. Fex, a jitney driver. As he
took the stand the sun, breaking
through cloud, shone strongly into the
courtroom, and co dazzlvd the eyes of
the jurors they had difficulty seeing the
witness. The foreman, Walter Wills,
held up n big writing tablet te bhield
his ejes as the convict was sworn.

vania, making a total of twenty-two
years and twenty-two days se, far."

Balman, the last convict witness,

but a few minutes. He pointed out
fewell, who was sitting beside County
Detective Ellis Parker.
"I heard him yelling, 'Here I am
under the bathtub. Come and get me.'
One time when I was out In the yard
a man told me that n crazy man was
coming out for a walk. It was Powell,
nnd he couldn't walk straight."
At the conclusion or tne convicts

they be token back te the State prison
at Trenten immediately. There was a
heavy guard of State troopers in the
courtroom and around tne court Dunn
ing and jail during their testimony.
Mr. Keown said he would have, ether
witnesses of the eame character from

The convicts were followed en the
stand by Dr. Mclvln Knelb, of Read
ing, a former practitioner of mechano mechane
therapy, who promoted the Bruncn
show nnd rose te the job of secretary.
"Did you ever hear of Jehn Brunen
threatening the life of nny one?" be
was asked.
There was an objection te this by
Mr. Kelsey which Justice Knllsch over
ruled. The witness answered: "Yes,
in the rnleldle of August, 1010."
Justice Knllsch ordered the answer
stricken out as the time was tee remote

between Mehr nnd Bruncn?" he was
