A PLAY ABOUT JAZZ
That Is Toe Preachy te Produce
the Effect Intended
The trouble with J. Hartley Manners'
latest piny, "The Nntlennl Anthem"
(Geerge II. Deran Company) Is thnt
the dramatist shouts his beliefs as a
sandwich man advertises- his wares,
along the public highway. Mr. Man
ners Is embittered, or seems te he,
against jazz. Unfortunately he falls
te make his tirade effective crcn for
theso who agree wlthjilm because he
allows preachment te outweigh dramatic
nrt.
"The National Anthem" Is told In
four nets, with settings In an American
country club, a ivcw lerK cabaret, ana
11 Paris hotel. Tn each net the char
acters drink continually and In each
act there is n jaza band offstage which
Inspires certain of the young mcu and
women te dance, and gives opertunitles
for Mr. Manners' mouthpiece te shake
his list at the neise and roil against the
degenerate world.
This mouthpiece, the father of the
here, is made by the author, a perfectly
impossible individual who alienates any
sympathy be might have had for bis
stand for decency by his unnatural and
vindictive attitude toward his son.
The son, by the way, is as unpleas
ant n, youngster as the modern realistic
stage has produced. The enlv thing
attractive nbeut him is the, author's
original description of, his nhjsicnl ap
pearance. He is seen drinking moder
ately in the llrst net. hopelessly in in
texlctitcd in the second, nnd ranging
from maudlin te practical insanity in
the third. Along this sweet path el
whisky guzzling, lie lends his charm
ing jeung uifc who is shown first as a
healthy and happy type of American
womanhood, nnd later us n nerve-shattered
nud tipsy roisterer in the Paris
fast set.
Tlevcring ever her is a former ad
mirer supposed te be sympathetic, but
mere or less of a prude who is present
when the long-impending tragedy oc
curs. This part of the play, bv the
way, parallels the Olho Themas case
te an unusual extent. Downhearted
and half-stupptied with drink, the hero
ine takes n poison tablet. Wc arc given
t understand It was by mistake, but nn
element of suspicion lingers, as it did
in the Olive Themas tragedy.'
At nnv Mte. the heroine of "The
National Anthem" docs net die, but her
dissolute hiisb.ind does, in an nute
wreck en his way te the hospital. In
the final scene, surrounded by loving
friends nnd relatives, Marian ts net
told of her husband's death. Tn fact,
she says that she still loves him, and
wc arc just ns surpiispd at thnt as
were si'crul of the characters. A con
certed and extensive tirade against jazz
is then indulged in by the entire cast
as the play's finale.
It is te be imagined that "The Na
tional Anlheei," played behind foot
lights, possesses a real theatrical (.
fectiveness. Mr. Manners is tee vet
eran a drumutist nbt te sec te that.
I'.ut. from the long, and overwritten
foreword, throughout the four hectic
ads. "Tlie National Authcm"' is a
heavy handed sermon.

"JOHNNY MOUSE AND

Johnny Oniello knows hew U write
for little children. He has proved it in
"Johnny "Meuse and the Wishing

fantastic story about a fnniilj of mice

nice things for firan'pu nnd Johnny,

This simple repetitious manner h ex
