EXTREME DULLNESS
IN LOMLMARKET
Prices Were Well Sustained De
spite Churned Condition
of Big Beard
New Yerk, Dec. 8. The rails were
the weak features of the early market
and the further retreat in this division
naturally hed an unsettling effect en
the general trading. Scattered liqui
dation nnd short selling were encount
ered during the most of the morning-,
but the reactienists apparently were
unable again te dislodge any consider
able nmeunt of long stock, or start a
general selling movement.
While the list, as a whole, seemingly
had a soft appearance at Intervals and
revealed little rallying power, It was
noticeable that some of the promi
nent shares offered strong resistance
te the selling pressure. This was over
looked for n time by reason of the heavy
offerings of the rails nnd some of the
speculative favorites In the industilal
list. Material roncesslens took place
in several of the neu-dlvldend paying
rail, but elsewhere the declines were
net serious.
It would be difficult te pin down anv
direct cause for the heaviness of the
rails except the fears entertained of
hostile legislation by the incoming Con
gress. The group for n time were
without suppeit, Intentionally or net
it would be hard te pay. However, if
the reneerted nttack en this division
was made for the purpose of forcing a
general reaction, the coup was a down
right failure.
The resistance which developed at
the lower levels caused a considerable
portion of the trading contingent te
Immediately shift position. This appar
ently enused some uneasiness en the
part of the shorts and before midday
was renched a general covering move
ment set in. The rebound in the rails
was net se pronounced as that occurring
in the Industrials, but still a greater
part of the early declines were retrieved.

GRAIN MARKET
Chicago. Dee. 8. Although unex
pected declines in Liverpool quotations
led te a downturn here in the wheat
market today at the outset, n rally seen
took place. Failure of Argentine price,
as well ns Ihese al Liverpool, te I
respond te yesterday's reports of har
vest delay and crop damage in Ar-
gentina, was mere than traders here
were prepared for. Gossip, however,
that the President would address Con
gress today, and might urge farm relief,
legislation helped te renew bullish sen-,
timent.
The opening, which ranged from J,sc
te -c lower, with May Sl.HHs te
Sl.lOVj and July $1.07'), te SUIT'. I
was followed by an interval of hesi- j
tiuicy and then by gains ail around.
i ern and eats paralleled the action
of wheat. After opening i-fcc te ".,.'
lower. May G9i' te ()!, the corn
market scored slight gains.
Oats Marted a shade te c off. May
13e, sagged n little mere, and then
began te climb.
Previsions reflected firmness in hog
values.

COTTON MARKET
New Yerk, Dec. 8. The census gin
ning figures of 11,318,144 bales, te De
cember 1. had little effect en the cotton
market, which opened 4 te 17 points
higher. There was further hull support,
and buying by Wall Street, commission
houses nnd Liverpool.
It was the general idea that the gin
ning reports pointed te a crop of around
lO.UOO.OlK) bales, possibly a little less,
and there was at tirst no great press
ure noted, although Inter the selling In
creased, notably from New Orleans in
terests, nnd prices dropped under lust
night's close. On the renctien, lernl
traders and Japanese houses nise sold.
