Chicago Heiress' Engagement
Proves Disappointing te
American Society
LIVED IN ENGLAND
SINCE CHILDHOOD
Inherits -Part of Grand
father's $200,000,000
Estate When 21 in May
II'' IS difficult te think of dimpled Dan Cupid as a bridge-builder, a merry,
prankish artisan throwing a span clear across the Atlantic.
But he is. The bridge he has built is net of masonry and steel, but is
strong enough te bear mere than a billion dollars that international mar
riages have transferred from this country te Europe.
Meney made here in a hundred ways and mere, in great trans-centinental
railroads, in dusty coal mines, in wealth-spouting oil wells, in vast
retail enterprises, finds its way te England and the Continent at the call
of chubby Dan.
Miss Gwendelyn Field is the latest
American heiress te plan an interna
tional alliance. Next May, when she
is twenty-one years old, she will in
herit a half million dollars from the
estate of Marshall Field, of Chicago,
her grandfather.
Londen has just heard the an
nouncement of Miss Field's engage
ment te Charles Edmondstone, heir
of Sir Archibald Edmondstone,
whose baronetcy dates back "te 1774.
The family scat is near Glasgow.
Miss Field has lived in England
since early childhood with her aunt,
Lady Beatty, wife of Earl Beatty,
famous English admiral. , I
Only as late as last year the
youthful heiress thought perhaps,
bhe would marry an. American. She,
said as much when visiting this
country nearly twelve months age.
Engagement Disappointing
te American Society
Announcement of the engagement
was a disappointment te American
society in general. Just as Chi
cago's elite were grieved and
slightly chagrined te have young
Marshall Field and his pretty wife,
formerly Evelyn Marshall, of New
Yerk, forsake the home city for New
Yerk Chicago has always claimed
the Fields se is New Yerk disap-'
pointed that Miss Field's marriage'
te an Englishman will prevent her I
establishing n residence in New
Yerk comparable te her brother's
new Leng Island home. And just as i
Chicago blames Mrs. Marshall Field,
v.he is of New Yerk stock, for alien-,
ating her young husband from the
eity of his birth, the Londen rela-1
tives of Miss Field are held respon
sible for thcintcrnatienal alliance. '
Miss Field will be twenty-one '
jurs old next May nnd at thnt time '
she will come into possession of the
estate left her in her grandfather's
will.
f In October. 1020. when An ac
counting was rendered by the Pro
bate Court, her share. had increased
considerably. She also received con-' of the name, and te his brother,
siderable property from her mother, Henry Field, new dead. Most of
who died in Londen in 1915. Miss ' Henry's estate also went te his
Field's mother was married te I brother.
