a Quality
Product
Last year thirty million
tens e! raw materials were
led into the Portland ce
ment mills of this country,
and the finished product
came out in approximately
400 million sacks. Te han
dle all this material through
the long process of pulver
izing, burning, and pulver
izing again, with such care
that a handful taken at ran
dom from any sack would -
meet the exacting specifica
tions of leading engineering
societies and the Govern
ment that was the manu
facturers1 task.
Materialsmust be handled in great
quantities in a cement plant, other
wise the cost (less new per pound
than that of any comparable man
ufactured product) would be pro
hibitive. The product must be uni
form and of high quality, for the
permanence of great structures,
and even life itself, depends en it.
This great task is simplified by
Hfty years of study and experi
mentation in quality control. But
it still calls for constant routine
testing by highly skilled artisans
and chemists.
Take the cement plant chemist,
for instance. Workmen guided by
his instructions proportion the
'various raw materials a ten or
mere at a time. The tests which
he makes te determine tnese pro
portions must be se precise that
the glass enclosed balance used
for weighing is accurate te the
nearest ten thousandth of a gram.
There are 454 grams te the pound .
Such a balance will quickly detect
the difference in weight of a piece
ei paper before and after you have
written your name en it.
1'ew industrial products require
as great care in theifrnanufacture
as perdand cement and few get it
se uniformly.
The guiding hand of the chemist
and his assistants is seen and felt
at every point in the process of
manufacture in the quarry or
pit where the raw materials are
where the raw materials arc
proportioned, mixed and ground
in the burning department
where under intense heat the
chemical transposition takes place
in the Hnished grinding depart
ment where the raw materials ,
new transformed into clinker be
come the iine powder we call
perdand cement.
Seme tests are made ever y 1 5 min
utes some hourly. Seme samples
are being taken continuously with
automatic samplers -ethers arc
snatched at random from the
conveyeis. Whatever experience
dictates is necessary te insure uni
formity and high quality that is
done.
