TITTA RUfFO SCORES A HUGE SUCCESS IN CONCERT Italian iarltene tings for In thualattle Audience at Metropolitan Tltta Buffe last evening scored as emphatic n success before a Philadel phia audience as has been achieved by nny singer ler many years, tie ap peared in the Metropolitan Opera Heuse, which was fairly well filled as retards numbers, but filled te overflow ing with respect te enthusiasm. Mr. Buffe sang four numbers that Is there wero four en the program but he sang fourteen times in all and these numbers were the cream of the baritone repertoire. All were operatic and camn In this erder: The Prologue from "Pegllaccl," the Toreador song from "Carmen." the Drinking song from "Hamlet" and the "Large al Facto Facte tnm" from the "Barber of Seville." These four numbers give play te about every possible human emotion and afford the singer a rare opportunity te dis tinguish himself If he Is capable of doing se with such a varied emotional and vocally exacting program. Mr. Itttffe showed Inst evening that he can de It. All the numbers were placed en the program by request of Buffe's Phil adelphia admirers. The great Italian baritone was In ?oed voice and he displayed his usual rollcsemeness en the stage, which al ways makes a great hit with his audi ence. He Is essentially an operatic rather than a lyric singer and, therefore, he could net have selected a program which suited his voice nor his mood of lest evening better than did the feuri Brest arias he save. In voice and In i certain temperamental capacities he is easily the king of the baritones. The audience was wildly enthusiastic and Mr. Buffe wns mere than generous In giving encores. He did net thrust his extra songs en the audience by any manner of means, but when he saw that they were clearly desired, he gave them cheerfully. Of all the numbers, he was at his best in 'the aria from "The Barber," both vocally, in spirit and especially in the matter of enuncia tion, taking the aria at a terrific tempo in the second part with every syllable ns distinctly pronounced as though the tempo were slew. It was a vertttablc tour de force of singing. As usual, Mr. Buffe acted the arias as though he were in costume nnd en the operatic stage. Miss Beatrice d'AUesnndre had the difficult role of assisting artist te Mr. Buffe. She has a fine mezzo soprano (almost contralto) vpjee and used it with exceptional grace and skill. It Is no easy matter te sing en the same program with an artist of the Buffe caliber, and Miss d'AUesandre achieved a remarkable success. Mhe sang first an old Italian song of Scnrlnttl and followed this immediately with a lovely fompesitlon entitled "Nebble" (Clouds), by one of the most Rifted of the modern Italian composers, Resplchi, whose or chestral composition, "The Fountains of Berne," presented by Tescanlnl, was one of the features of last evening. Miss d'AUesandre also sang Donizetti's "O mie Fernande" nnd the beautiful "O Den Fatnle" of Verdi, responding with well-chosen encores te all. Mr. Sciarrettl. formerly one of the conductors of the Sun Carle Opera Company, was the accompanist and ap peared twice in soles, doing both with conspicuous success. Can Yeu Tell? By R. J. and A. W. Bodmer Why It Is Possible Fer ITs te Fleat When Bathing It Is possible for people te float when bathing because the specific gravity of ordinary water is just about the same as the specific gravity of the human body. Sen water In a little heavier than fresh water se that It Is easier te swim and float in it. The specific gravity of a thing means its weight us compared with an equal volume of water. Archlmldes, who lived In the third centurv, discovered specific gravity. Hlcre, King of Syra cuse, had given a lump of pure geld te his Reldmnlths te make Inte a crown. When the crown was finished the king suspected that the workmen had stolen n part of the geld and ndded some silver In Its place, but he could net prove this because they had made It weigh exnetly as much as the pure geld. Archlmldes, who was asked te Investigate, found the king was right. He secured a ball of pure cold nnd one of niire silver. each welshing exnetly as much n the crown, lip put the geld bHll into a vessel of water and marked en the side , of the vessel the height te which the i water rose. lie next put the silver ball into the water and ag.'iin miirUed the height of the water. He showed thus that, although both weighed the same, the water rose higher when the silver wns immersed. Lastly, he took out the silver and put the crown into the water. If the crown had been of pure geld the water should have risen te the geld mark. The water, however, rose higher than the , pure geld mark, but net se high as the silver inHrk. vk MUtch tatln Patent leather Dull leather Tan rutin Smart! Hand-turned sole.
