Francis Heward Williams, author,
poet, and descendant of ene of the
olden families in the State, who died
at his home In Germantown yesterday
in his seventy-eighth year, will be
burled tomorrow afternoon. Services
will be held in St. Lulte's Episcopal
Church, Germantown, en the vestry of
which he served for many years.
Mr. Williams, whose ancestry in this
country gees back te the days of Wil
liam Penn, had been ill blnce the death
of his wife, Mrs. Mary 15. Housten
Williams, in February, 1020. Most of
his life had been devoted te literature
and he was known as a leader In many
literary movements. He contributed
(.onerously himself in poetry and pree
te the newspapers and magazines.
He begnn a business career, and
nltheugh, as it turned out, he was des
tined for the world of art, his busi
ness ventures were all successful. Jtrem
lumbering he turned te the wool
business as n member of the firm of
Seal, Williams & Ce.
Mr. Williams also had ether business
Interests, such as coal and railroading.
He withdrew from all of these when
the lure of the pen became tee strong
for him.
Mr. Williams was born In this city
September 2. 1844. He wan n son of
Jeseph ,T. Williams and Martha P.
Shoemaker Williams. Ills early edu
cation was received from tutors and
later, at the Baldwin Classical Scherl
at Bread and Arch streete, from which
lie was graduated In 1800.
Fer ten years he contributed te the
papers and magazines.- Among his
writings, the mere serious of which
came after his journalistic career, were
the Princess Elizabeth, a lyric drama,

edy In two acts, 18S1 : Theodora, a
Christmas pastoral, 1882; Master and
Man, a play in five actB, 1884; Atman,
the Documents In a Strange Case,
ism ; Pennsylvania Peets of the Pro
vincial Period, an essay, 1803: the Flute
Player and Other Poems. 1804: At the
Hise of the Curtain, Dramatic Pre
ludes, 1004. Electro, one of his
