AUSTRALIAN EXPERT HERE
By SANDY McNIIIMCK
THKHK is something new nearly every
dsy In the possibilities of golf, and
here Is the very latest. t
There nre certain town eluhs which
provide a haven for the traveler te
distant cities but never until new has
the Idea been applied te country clubs.
A certain group of Philadelphia golf
ers Is new organizing the first chapter
of what you might call a "links frater
nity." It won't, hove Greek letters or
anything like that but. as the rellege
men build their fraternity houses and
organize for fraternity purposes se will
linksmen in various cities build a course
and form their district branch of the
organisatien. , ,
The'idea erglnlnsted In Chicago. It s
a chain of golf courses extending all
ever the Country. Yeu Jein one club and
veu're n member of them nil. A high
standard of cxeellene will he main
tained in the constructen of the course
and maintenance. Certain principle
will he stuck te In their government
and the organization Is Intended te
boost the gnme of golf and carry it te
new heights in American popularity.
Ten cities are already starting branches.
Lecal Branch
The Philadelphia branch Is .te be
known as the Snmerten Hills Country
Club under the government of the na
tional body which has been Incorpor
ated as the Country Clubs of America.
Such local clubs as Gulph Mills. Sun-
nybroek. Tavistock. CeilarbroeK nnti
ethers, started by n block of members
leaving one c'ub te build their own.
The Somerton Club is drawing its mem
bership from all flubs, golfers who be
lleve in Its principles and big Ideas.
The first thought wns that it. should
be possible for n golfer going from one
citv tj another te become n member of
a club without the tedious delny en a
waiting list which nearly every golf
club has these das. Then, tee. that he
should hnve (lie same tesr imn uic snuic
kind of an opportunity he had in his
ether club.
i The fraternity
or club idea will be
followed in all the branches, but it is
net the idea here te dwell tee much en
the national phase of the movement.
Lecal golfers will ue inicrcsicu in uie

Plenty of Roem
Property has been acquired te the ex
tent of 200 acres about a mile fiem the
Phllment Country Club. 1. Is between
iomerten and Ferest Hills en the Head
ing and near the Northeast Boulevard.
The original idea we te start ipod iped
estlv with nine holes, but interest in
creased se rapidly that the Beard of
GoVerneis has decided te build twenty
seven holes this summer and cvenlually
te have thirty-six. with rin cveit bigger
lav-eut if necessary. Such a proposi preposi propesi
tiiin is a distinct addition te the golfing
facilities in this city.
It is hoped te make the new courses
the very best in town, and te this end
the officials have imported n sea-going
architect and world traveler. Fred
