' ''Yeu don't knew what si 'tapped roll' Is? ,wny, a tapped con. is myn coil tnat Is tapped., Kvcryb6dy knews: that." But he finds' that everybody doesn't knew. It. nut a tapped roll Is really n verf simple piece of apparatus and, as'lt Is used in virtually every recelv Ing'set. let's spend a few minutes ex amining one. ' tn ' But first let's forget wireless and think of 'ordinary plumbing. 'Ypu've all seen these cells 'of water pipe' that. go V . TANK n e ie ae 30 4e RECEIVING TANK . OKOUMD This dlngrnm represents a cell of pipe In a water heating apparatus. There are supposed te be spigots en each pipe at the supply tank and also en each pipe at the receiv ing tank. The accompanying .article explains Its similarity te a cell In radio Inte modern heatlng systems for the rapid heating 6f water. The mere pipe surface you expose; te -the flames, the mere het water you will get. Our illustration shows such a heal ing cell its It might have been built by a man with the nightmare. Suppose we have such a coil, with flames all about it but. with different pipes run ning from the supply tank te different turns of the roll and different ether pipes taking the water from different ether turns of the pipe and delivering It te the receiving tank, which may be considered the' rest of thp heating system. ' Remember that there" are flames all around the whole cell and. every' square Inch of Its surface Is heated. Yeu 'sec spigots en nil the pipes from the supply tank and all emptying into the receiving tank. New, Mipiwsc wc open spigot marked "0" from the supply tank and the spigot marked "O" te the receiv ing tank. Obviously, we aren't going te get any het water, for the water is going te run straight from the upper tank te the lower because the two "O" spigots arc directly connected by pipe. But (assuming the cell pipe Is always full of water), suppose wc open supply spigot Ne. 0 nnd receiving spigot Ne. 10. Then, following the pipe connec tions', wc find that the water will run through ten turiiw -of the het coil and be heated as much as these ten turns ran heat It. If wc want it n little hotter, wc can use supply spigot Ne. 5 and receiving spigot Ne. 10 and then wc will get the heating effect from fifteen turns of the cell. If wclitive ten supply spigots, num bered from 0 te 0. and eleven receiving Mdgets, numbered from 0 by tens te 100, with the two 0 pipes connected, we can get any lientlng effect from zero te 100 turns. New, that's nil n "lapped .coil" in radle.is. The electricity. Is the water, the wire is the piping nnd. Instead of getting heat from the cell. wc get cer tain electrical effects which give us greater or less wave length. .The .mere turns of cell wc use Tn the pipes, the greater the heat : the mere turns of wire we include in the radio coil, the greater the wave length wc tune te. The supply tnnk In the. illustration is the lrndlng-Iii wire from your aerial. The supply spiggets are the "unit" switch points numbered from 0 te 0. The receiving tank Is your ground wire nnd the receiving npigets nre your ''tens" switch-points .numbered from 0 te 100. On an ordinary amateur aerial with nn ordinary cylindrical coil,-you will use. something like twenty or thirty turns te get 200 meters nnd the whole 100 turns "ought, te give you close te 1000 meter". The broadcast concerts ought (e conic In somewhere around fifty or sixty. Of course, this Is only giiPSMvnrk. ns length, lieight, number of wires, length of lead-in nnd ground nnd local conditions vary the natural ware length of any adjustment. But It will give you nn idea of what te expect. .Moving the "lens" switch will iiuully let you henr the signal mere or less faintly. Yeu tune your secondary by changing coupling and condenser until you get best response nnd then try moving the unit switch efthe tapped cell te sec if you can still further im prove It. Tn the next article, we'll see hew easy it Is te wind and tnp such coils ns this.
