Hid you the apparatus was a swindler.
It is, of course, possible te work a
crystal set without a buzzer, It 1j
petplbte te de almost anything In radio.
The great thing about the buzzer is that
it nnsurcs you that your contact Willi
jour detector In all right. Then, if
Oil (ion i rci nignais, you nre jusiiucu
loeklns te tnc set ler tee trouble.
Neat little buzzers arc made csnrclally
for thie purpose, but It Isn't necessary
te buy one. An ordinary buzzer such
gs the boss uses te call the Qffice boy
or such as arc put en some front doers
Instead of bells will de excellently. And,
if you have an old electric bell, just
take off the bell, break off tbe clapper
arm and you arc all fixed.
On all such buzzers, there are two
binding pests with screw tops for tin
wires from the battery. Yeu wire one
of these pests te your switch or pusn
button and the ether te one pole of an
ordinary dry cell net the kind used
for, Picket flash lamps, but one of the
old-fnslilencd cylindrical ones. Itun
another wire from the ether pest of the
dry cell te the ether screw of the switch
or button.
Yeu will notice that the little vibrat
ing arm that docs tTie buzzing vibrates
between two coils and n metal upright.
Fasten a wire te this little upright,
preferably by solder, but n geed tight
twist will de, and run the ether end of
the wire te any pnrt of your ground
wire. It is usun'Iy best te fasten It
directly te the ground binding pest ea
your receiving set.
The process is this:
Put en the phones anil press the but.
ten te make the buzzer buzz. Yeu will
prebab'v net hear it In your phones at
first. The sound will come obviously
from the buzzer. Keep the buzzer buzz
ing and fee around en the face of the
crystal with the catwhlskcr wire and
seen you will strike n sensitive spot.
This will be indicated by the sound of
the buzzer coming unmistakably In the
phones.
Even when you nre receiving signals,
you should press the button once in u
while te mnke sure that your contact 1'
ttlll geed.
With a geed spot found en the errs
tsl, you nre vcadv te "tune in." Firsl
move the switch blade or else the slider
of the pnrt of your coupler mnrkc-1
"primary" and set it te include about
twenty turns of wire.
Then, with the primnry left that way,
change your "ceunllng" (pulling lnn"r
cell In and out with loose coupler; re
wiring Inside coil with vnrioceupler or
opening apart and closing with flat
coils) nt the same time, with the ether
hand, turning the knob of the variable
condenser around first one way and then
the ether.
If 5'eu don't get, n signal, niter the
primary switch or slider te include
about six or eight mere turns of wire
and repent the process with the ether
appnrntus. Keep en this way, giving
yourself nil possible combinations, and
you will seen hear n signnl.
When you de. vary your primary by
'Ingle turns until the signal Is loudest.
Then move the couplings trifle and also
the variable cendenhcr te sec if you
can im rove it. . If net, you've get It
at its best.

Next week is the first annual Music Week in Philadelphia. This'
Stere, the home of the famous Strawbridge & Clothier Chorus, and
the birthplace of many musical achievements, is, of course, in perfect
harmony and accord with such an effort te interest Philadelphia in
Philadelphia's musical genius. Therefore, we have arranged two' un
usual features for Music Week that will bring the happiness of
music te many Philadelphia homes.
Where Business

By HARVEY M. WATTS

for mixed voices, thirteen mala
choruses, thirty miscellaneous
'anthems, fifty-four Christmas

The socie-musical significance
of the work accomplished by the
chorus and its leader cannot be
exaggerated. That what it does
has received national recogni
tion in every way justifies the
idea that heve is a case wherein
business, which easily succeeds
as business, adds a new clement
te American life when it enters,
into fields of artistic endeavor,
supposedly denied the busy
work-a-day world, and actually
"conquers through music."
Thoughts
en Music
MUSIC brushes away from
the soul the dust of every
day life. Auerbach.
MUSIC hath charms te
seethe the savage breast, te
soften rocks and bend the
knotted oak. Congreve.
MUSIC is a discipline, and
a mistress of order and geed
manners; she makes the
people raider and gentler,
