Insulating means preventing the weak electric cur rents from going nnytvherc except through the lrcs intended for them. An insulator Is a substance through which' electricity will net flew. When you arc puttins n plumbing 1 sjstem In your house yen see te it that the water has an easy flew through the pipes nnd that there nre no had joints or leaks through which it can escape. Wlret are the pipes for the radio plumbing supply. Bad joints nre bad connections between wires. Leaks are where the Insulation ia peer and the electric current manages te escape from the wire and waste its energy somewhere where it can net be used. Se geed connections and geed insula tion nre the prime requisites of en ac tlnl and a receiving vet. Porcelain Is n geed insulator; se are unrd rubber, bakeiite, sulphur, para tine, glass and a deten ether substances. Consequently we uke one of these sub stances wherever a wire comes near an other object through which it might waste its energy. . In rtgtlng up your aerial these In sulators must receive the strictest at tention. Ott each aerial mast or pole you will hare n pulley through which you run the rope or clothesline that hauls un the aerial one end of n geed insulator, and the ecrial wire Ik made fast te tin ether end of the Insulator. If you have a two, three or four wire nerlal, you will have sticks of weed called ".spreaders" te held the wires the proper distance apart. Yeu will bnc te have a rope tied te each end of each spreader se as te tie the spreaders down horizontal. Each one of thene "guy ropes," ai they are railed, must have an Insulator where It joins the spreader. This may seem a useless precaution, but remember that en n damp or rainy day rope becomes saturated with water, and water 1m an excellent conductor of electricity. The currents received In your aerial wire would enjoy running down the water In the rope and laugh ing at your attempts te force them Inte your receiving set. ' If you want the best, jett can buy these insulators made in n form espe cially adapted for aerial work. They nit from six te twelve Inches long and arc made of the best Insulating material and formed with deep corrugations te make the leakage path of the surface as long as possible. But If you can't afford these luxuries get some of these porcelain cleats that arc made te held electric wires along the ceilings of buildings. They will answer the purpose very well for the receiving set. It Is best te give them n geed coating of grease every once In n while se that rain water will run off of them and net collect in Mich a way as te invite the electricity te leak out of the wire. Geed Insulation Is also important at the place where your wire from your aerial comes through the wall or win dow te your receiving set. There are insulators built especially for this pur pose, tee, and n geed one will cost about $2. They arc called "lead-in" insulators. But you can rig one up yourself. Cut a beard about two inches bread and long enough te fit snugly Inte your window frame. This will enable you te clew ) our window down en It tightly when It rains. Bere a hole In this beard just big enough te pass through I a fhert length of heavily Insulated wire about Ne. 10. Selder the lead from , the aerial te the outside end and bring i the inside end te your receiving set. Or 1 ret one of these porcelain cleats snugly I ever the hole and pass the lead-In wire I through, but If you de this you must ' wrap all that Is Inside with insulating I tape, for there must he no danger of anything touching the bare wire of the lead-in. 8:55 P.
