There are certMn miporBtltleus- the

Sletely. One of these ! tlie traditional
'uesdnr reaction, wlilrh If it does neth-

Then, 'again, when a major market

struck by the current forward move
ment with all the earmarks of an in
discriminating outside rnllewln;, pre
fcsslenal market commentators and ft
large percentage of the professional
element 1 en the fleer are in constant fear
of some unfavorable development.
While - the latter element have the
skill te quickly shift position en the
first sign of .danger nnd are always quick
te change. It is n safe bet that the
majority of the active leaders are either
out, of the market or arc experimenting
in a small way en the short side. There
is no denying the fact, there has been
and there Is still being n liberal dis
tribution of stocks by peels, and ether
speculative combinations. It Is admit
ted en all sides that the market acli

that it is far from being", in what may
be considered a sound technical position
te resist unexpected news.
Pennsy's Army of Shareholders
Interesting light en the highly specu
lative character of the recent forward
movement in the security markets is
furnished lu the t-tatcment covering the
number of Pennsylvania Railroad
stockholders. There wcrp 4301 stock
transfers during the month of March,
of which 3022 were made In New Yerk
nnd 1369 at Philadelphia. This resulted
In a net gain of six stockholders for the
month, but established a new high rec
erd en April 1 of 141,810, but which
was nn increase et 4117 ever April 1
Inst year.
During the year there unquestionably
was active absorption of the stock by
both the small nnd large investors, but
the above figures prove very conclusive
ly the speculative character of much of
the recent bullltfli demonstrations.
Foreign holdings ou April 1 consti
tuted 3.82 per cent of stock outstand
ing, as compared with 4.83 en March 1,
ever a year age, and held 31.00 per cent
of stock, a decrease of 0.2Ti per cent.
Women stockholders en April 1 num
bered 60,400, increase 1034. On April
1 nearly twice as much stock 'was held
in the State of Pennsylvania as com
pared with the State of New Yerk,
being 40.42 per cent and 23.53 per cent
respectively.

TjEMNDA was worried, A shadew1
- appeared In, her dark cyea and it
pucker lingered en her lips,
"I certainly would net have set this
brew if I hed known I had te make
this trip te Buffalo. It takes as much
attention as a baby.
"Ten pounds of raisins at thirty
cents a pound and two pounds of brown'
sugar nt twenty; te say nothing or the
tartaric acid ivhy it a rldlculetisvf'I
can't afford te waste it. And it will
be wasted if I de net stir it every day
nnd watch it." Hellnda began te won
der what 8hc could de.
There was no one with whom ,sha
lived. She occupied her tiny studio
alone. There was no one with whom
she could burden .the brew.
Her trip te' Buffalo was necessary.
She had premised Harry that en hb)
next shore 'leave she would visit his
mother" In Buffalo se that they might
both enjoy hia holiday together. In
fact, she bad halt premised that fbe
would give him en answer te hia pro
posal at this time.
New, she seemed te feel it a nuisance
te go se far away Just te see Harry.
And she was beginning te wonder if
this iverc the proper state of mind for
nn about -te -be -engaged girl. She wa.il
Y'ery fend of' Harry nnd very proud of
his officer's uniform. Net that Harry's
uniform had been any special service
Lut it wns becoming, nnd he had grad
uated from the naval academy and had
been in part of the war zone.
Fer the moment the uniform and
Henry she called him Henry when she
did net feel se kindly toward him
paled into insignificance by comparison
with the home brew in which she was
absorbed.
As she put things Inte her suitcase
she decided te be unconventional aud
nsk the young man en the same fleer
te coine in each morning nnd stir tlir
pet. She had never seen him, but the
regularity Yvith which he came and Yvent
each morning nnd evening made her
realize that he was n dependable person.
Tem Westen, Scotch as a bunch of
purple heather, wns surprised nt the
quaint request of the girl Yvhese Y'elcc
lie had heard in the next room te his
own. Fer be it known that Belinda
fang and practiced from time te time.
The man's smile jyas encouraging te
Belinda. She observed a long scar
across his cheek. Then her eyes sought
the expression that wns unmistakable
the tale that told of unforgettable de
struction. She knew in a minute that
the man had fought In the big war.
"Would it would you think It
strange if I asked you te go te my
room every morning for a few days
11ml stir my home brew pet?" she asked
timidly.
Tem laughed. "I'yc done harder1
things than that." he said.
"I nm dashing for a train." she
went en. "Here is the key. The big
stick that lies across the pet is te stir
it with, and and eh, thanks se much."
Tem took the key. "I'll stir it.
Don't Yverrv. And shall I nest your
'mail perhaps?"
"Oh, YY-euld you?" She gave him her
nddrcss. "Don't send papers Just let
ters that leek as if they might be
checks from magazines. I draw pic
tures and sometime I get a check,
which I need."
"I'll try te extract some from the
pestmnn for you. It will give me pleas
ure te de these little things for you,
se don't worry Yvhlle you nre away."
Belinda leied the succession of r's
in his words. In fact, Belinda found
herself as he traveled toward Buffalo
ami Henry thinking far mere about
the Scotchman's smile and tone and
Kc11cr.il magnetism than about the man
she wns en her ivay te see. She could
see tlie great war across his face and
the winning smile that obscured it.
"It eh, no it couldn't be love at
first sight." she tried te tell herself.
"And yet It is something. I have
never felt tills Yvny before."
Then she began te wonder if he had
liked her. Was she his type?
That she ias Ycry much his type
Tem Westen had decided as he stirred
each day the new hissing brew. He
looked about the little studio; he oh eh
M'l'Ycd the nominees of it; he decided
thnt Belinda was u domestic girl as
v ell as a most beautiful one.
