The wnsen Is ever. The gaiety of
lat nlfht I nut awny, yratiped up in
rOttOtl WOOL HWI.nei te ne nriniRiii irai
n.ln until, the be'ln of Barter ring
forth. Putting aside nit religious scntl;
inenls. however, which I hope mejjt of
us have, Lent is nn awfully goon tnmg,
eren en a common Bcnse basis. Yeu
knew, the round of gayetr would keep
up for a couple of months mere, find
every one's digestion would be "ab "ab
ietlvely." entirely nnd "pogelutely',
ruined with rich feed, late hours nnd
.11 ttl Wit Of It.
But before you go into this Lenten'
retirement (lienently, I den t mean te be
area-tie. either;, I Knew you want te
hear about last night's ball. It was
plinnly gorgeous!
The decorations were, simply wonder-
Ail. I think there were thousands of
1 balloons all touching the ceiling and
great bunches of them nttached from
the boxes lower down in the room. The
front of each box had a' clown's fnCe
with, eyes mane et eicctric iigius, wwen
winked rind blinked facetiously at the
' dancers all through the evening. Then
! about the ballroom and standing around
tlie Clever Heom. tee, were lifc-shse
clowns of weed, dressed in fetching cos
tumes, and many a one did I sec pranc
ing gayly round in n dummy dance dur
ing the evening. The surprise of (he
ball was n serpentine dance which
utarted premptlr at twelve, and while
' the dancers trailed in and out through
the guests, shadowy lights and long
coils of colored papers were waved ever
them, giving n most wonderful effect.
Oh, nnd I forget te mention that the
Wi were much decorated with tinsel
nnd you cannot imagine hew gorgeous
this was wncn me nawiiiuiiin una kw
trie sunbursts were tttrncdVen it.
One of the very prettiest was worn
In Delphlne Ctemwell i it was a blnck
nnd -white satin Pierrette frock trimmed
'with white roses and rhinestone nnd
was meet becoming. Jlmmle Crom
well was a Spanish Troubadour. In
fact, Spain certainly had her innings
lait night in point of costume. I never
hava seen se many Carmeneitas, torea
dors. troubnUeurs, mule drivers, gypsy
bandits nnd dancers whose costumes
spoke of Madrid and Revilla nnd the
mountain country of Spain. It was
most delightfully picturesque!
Kitty Merris nnd Hugh I'arrtsn. for
instance, went as a epunixn eeupie irem
"The 'Four Horsemen." Jeanne de
tleusse was rnvlshing in n Hpnnlsh
costumefashiened of a white shawl cm
brpMercd in red, and she had n red silk
scarf most artistically draped ureund
ber head. .
Anether very striking Spanish get
up was that worn by Mrs. HolHter
Sturges. Over a skirt of nl'e green satin
was draped a Spanish shawl of nile
green crepe embroidered in pink roses,
and in her hair was a huge dark comb
and tome fetching rosebuds. I was de
lighted te see Colonel Henry D. Llnds
Icy, of New (Yerk, nt the ball. Yeu
knew, he is the pnst national com
mander of the American Legien, nnd
lie was looking very handsome in a
Colonial costume. He is staying with
th HturirpMw lii Chestnut Hill. An
ether of their guests was Mrs. Rita
Claphane, of Washington. Mr. Sturges
was get up ns a Scotch hlghlander.
Harriett? niddle, who gave a dinner
before the ball, were wonderful Chinese
clothes, consisting of grpen satin trous
ers and a long coat of old rose satin
embroidered in geld. She were n black
wig and her headdrcs was of red witin
and geld, with a tassel hanging ever ene
car.
ANOTHER a tu lining effect was
brought about by Mrs. Tem Dunn,
who wafi entirely in black. Her skirt
was short and fluffy nnd covered with
iequlns and the bodice nnd shoulder
.traps were entirely of the sparkling
little scales. Ou her head -he were a
trl-cerne lint miulc entirely of sequin..
It was great! A smart ballet dnncer
was Mrs. Henry Weeks, whose skirt
and bodice were "of black and orange
sequins and she were nn audacious
small hat en the slde of her bend.
Mrs. Harry Thayer was a ballet girl,
tee, in a hnndseme costume of turquoise
blue-spanglcd satin, with short, full
skirt trimmed with clusters of red
roses; with it bIic were u bandeau of
pearls and rhlncstenes. Mr. Thayer
wai a Spanish toreador. Mrs. Richard
Kdmund nnd Mrs. Hurry Umbsen, the
tfltter Mra Tlinvpr'ti ul.rer .lintli pflinr I
ever from New Yerk for the ball. Mrs.
uuiuM'ii were u pierre.te cusium. ei ,
wte mi tin nnu crystals, with white
fur trimming the skirt, and u white
tln tnm e'shnnter, with streamers
with balls of fur at the ends. Mrs.
Albert Frnnclnc looked most attractive
us u KimnMi girl in black and red.
The entire ballroom fleer nnd supper
rooms of the l.clIeMio-Stratferd were
;rlven ever te the ball, and supper wns i
sirved dewnstnlrn in the Palm and
Stratford rooms after midnight. . The j
decorations in the Russinn style were ,
meKl unusual and striking. Hcfere the
bull both the 'liellevue nnd the Ritz
looked like fancy-dress parties in
themselves; there wan bcnrccly n tabic
nltheut a guest in fnncy oestumo and
bemc very lurge dinners were given.
OF COURSE opera came in for Its
bare of excitement last night.
Vhat with Jcrltska In "La Tosea,"
t the Academy, and Mary Garden, in
the mueh-tnlkeil of "Saleme," at the
Metropolitan, there was very much
UeitiB in operatic circles. Reth houses
were sole! out and the audiences were
-together festive. '
