Kxecnt for n few aenttrrlnir individual peel demonstrations, the ten dfney of the general list since the open ing of the cutvent ,ear nas been one of Indecision. Within the last fortnight miner peMiivc reactionary symptoms ueie prc.ent. These, however, preved1 ' te be merely a halting period rather ) than any definite change in the current' of the major movement which und itsi inception in the early rail months of Vherea n year age security values' '(Might a lower level ey cesy h'tages in , line with the progress of deflating or , liquidating movement, the tide of values l gives all signs new et being distinctiv upward. At least It has been found after each reactionary period the sub 'equeitt recover. invariant)' lifts the av- j erage level of values into new high I ground. Much has been accomplished , by reason of attlliclal manipulation, or mere popularly known as peel nctivl-' ties. Yet the broadening of thcte opera tiens is te be accepted as a distinctly healthy sign, because ft unquestionably reflects a growing confidence In a ma terial Improvement In the general situa tien. As a matter et tact, acceptable authorities quite generally regard the immediate outlook as one of definite hopefulness. Thi.s confidence is net' merely one of sentiment, but is based i .uKn the knowledge of the rapid adjust- ' ments accomplished in fundamental con- j jdltiens. In both the foreign ana domestic sit- I nations there are te be found many signs i ; of encouragement. The successful rounding out of the Armament Confer- j eiice and the passage of the foreign debt i refunding bill offset In a measure the unsettling influence, of the seldie- bonus i bill, which has been employed mere or less netitely as a rie.irih argument. There is at the same time a growing hope the Chicago conference will resuli In a satisfactory readjustment of the transportation situation, while t lie un interrupted terevery in sterling ex change indicates a consistent clearing ' up of the foreign economic situation. The foreign problems. It Is true, are still far away from a happy solution, but the right steps, apparently, are being taken in the right direction, which are certain in the end te bring the much desired results. It is net strange se many of the dis tressingly peer earning statements of the industrial cenceniH command little ', mere than academic interest, or exert 'e little market Influence. Such exhi bitions had long since been anticipated, and were discounted In the almost con- , stnnt melting of security values in last j ear's market. I 153 . . I J 68 Most of the active local stocks ran1 Inte heavy profit-taking after a lively and higher opening this morning. In terest nsain centered in the local utili ties shnrea mccause of the sensational tlcvelepmenta fn the Rapid Trnneit sit nation. That stock seen after the inl tint dealing reached 24, or J4 nbore yesterday's top netxh. A much mere liberal supply of stock ws encountered, which subsequently en used a reaction te 22. II. n. I. continued in active de mand, reaching 41. while the preferred touched 52. The common en realising reacted te 40''. American Stores is sues also remained active, with the common advancing" te 04 nnd the pre ferred te 124, but neither retained the sains. While Ihe activity of the above shares exerted a diverting influence the dealings in the general list were bread nnd active with generally better prices. Lake Superior sold up te 8 : Bank of 'North America warrants rallied te C0. Tl'e Philadelphia Electric issues were well sustained and with the ex ception of the common touched the top prices of the week. The preferred reach ing 28. Pennsylvania, Railroad made n new high for the year nt 34V4, which including the dividend tnken off this week wns equal te 35. Lehigh Naviga tion ran up te 00. There wns plenty of excitement in the week's developments In the local mar ket. The first came In the long awaited announcement of the recapitalisatien plan of the Electric Storage Battery Company, giving the stockholders four shares of no par .stock for one of the present $100 par stock. As several months will elapse before the share holders will vote en the preposition, it is Intimated the dividend will be raised from, the present 12 per cent per annum basis te 10 per cent, which will mean a dividend of 4 per cent en the new stock. While there is little doubt but that program will be carried' out. as evidently the majority of the stock is new in possession of Interests who leek mero en the stock market, side t linn en conservative business lines. With eply 200,000 shares outstanding, there wns net much room for speculative play, but with 800,000 there is no limit for the market game. A great many local holders regret the outlook of making this local favorite r. speculative foot ball. Then tome along the Rapid Transit contrevcrsv. The profit-sharing propo prepo sition of Mr. Mitten and his premised 0 per cent dividends took the Street completely by surprise. Subsequently events suggesting n bitter and vigorous contest for control ejt the company at the forthcoming annual meeting threw some light en Mr. Mitten's remarkable generous policy, 'inc situation is mntie the mero interesting by reason 01 tne injection of the operations of en ap parently strong peel. Way back in the fall, hints were dropped such a peel was in formation nnd n goal had been set which would carry the stock te much higher prices. These familiar witlr the tangled local transit situation could net see any substantial basis for such a movement. 'I His opinion was In n measure confirmed by the stumbling block which the peel ran Inte in the early part of December by meeting an unexpected large supply of stock after the quotation crossed 10. Uessip lias it that tne peel is irienuiy te the Mitten management and it is new believed the formation of the com. binatlen was induced by advanced in formation of these policies which Mr Mitten made public at the meeting 01 the trellcymen Inst Memmy nignt. While intimations in local market circles hinted at Internul dissension, the number and the standing of the di rectors contesting the Mitten raau'ie ment was n big surprise. It is staled, the contesting Interests arc net opposed te the building up process of the Mit ten management, but are making their furht acainst whnt. they cull a "one man mnnngement." Tn ether words, the complaint is made that most of the recent important policies were effected, or suggested, without consultation nr approval of the full heard of directors. Whntever may be the outcome of the controversy, the incident In all events has injected considerable vigor into the trading nnd hns carried the stock te a level where many who had the lemcriiy te buy, when It was friendless, can rea lize considerable profit for their courage, Philadelphia Stocks NEW YORK BONDS Canadian N 7 3.... 1024 Cana'n Pae 4s B 78 U Chits Cep'r et 1 864 11.,... 8T 2 87 4 87'j 1 87H 0 87 CMIe Cep'r Ti 1.... 11014 Chinese Oeve't H-K nir Ba 1 46 City Bern te 1.... 1084 City of Btrctn 8a rets 9.... 106 Cty Itle da J nerle 8s 4.
