The Metropolitan Opera Company
last evening continued thp pxcellent
plan which Mr. flnttl-CnMnsrt ba
Adopted toward I'lilladdlphla this sen sen
sen, of giving our nudletiees the really
worth-whlle nnteltlrs which nre pio pie
duced In New Y6rk, by thp llrst Phila
delphia performance of T.ale's "Lp Itel
d'Ys" with an excellent east nnd the
nccurate and beautiful stage settings
for which the company Is famous.
The opere ns n whole proved te be n
distinctive nnd erlflnnl work, pecul
iarly French In style, but French In n
different way from tnu operas of nny
ether composer of that nationality.
There Is little use of the Wnguerlnu
"leit-metif," but that composer's Idcn
of continuous melody. Instead of set
recitative. Is fftllewcd throughout. Most
of the melodies are very effective, nnd
the arln for tenor In the first scene of
the last net, "Vnlnement. e hlen
almee," Is one of the loveliest in mod
ern epeintle writing. The vocal re
nutrements nnd the situation exactly
1 fit the voice and the style of Mr.
(Hgll, nnd it is doubtful if nny tenor
living could hnve given n better per
fermance than Iip did. i lie applause
at thp close! of the nrln stepped the
perfermancp for several minutes.
The orchestration of the opera Is sin-
gularly uneven. At most times it Is i
exquisitely beautiful, but In u few plnces I
It is ppcullnrly liipffeetive, especially !
when I.nle's experlence with iiistiumen- I
tal music Is considered. At thee spots ,
the orchestration is net ndapted eiilier
te the dramatic situation nor le the
vocal effect apparently nitnrd nt '
Anether Interesting point is the bal
let. A bnllet has no mere plan1 in this l
tragic nnd gloomy story than It bus In
the Wagnerian music drnnin. and the,
composer apparently realized this, but ,
knew at the same timu thnt French i
operatic tradition demands a bullet, even '
If It has te Interrupt a funeral scene
en the stage Te emit It entirely would
probably mean n renl fuueral for the of- .
fending opera lie get around the situ situ

benutlful aria of the opera te nn iw iw

let nt this point becoming pnrt of tin

of cveiy one except the cist, mid the
story of the opera proceeds.
The evertuic wns plnyed nt the be

It singularly beautiful nnd decided te'
