bUNDED in 1837 at Second
and Callowhill Streets at that
time the city's shopping centre
and sinr.ft 187ft in rhfi hnildincr
new occupied at 1 126-1 128 Chestnut
Street, the Darlington Stere will be 85
years old next April!
There must be real merit in any
organization which is continuously in
business for mere than three-quarters
of a century! There must be an unfail
ing policy of square dealing; sufficient
capital and buying talent te have the
right merchandise at the right time and
at the right price ; intelligent and loyal
empleyes imbued with the spirit of
courtesy and a genuine desire te serve
their customers well !
Most Philadelphians of mature years
can recall many stores which flourished
here in the past; stores which were
household names; big stores, small
stores; some of long standing, ethers of
meteoric rise and fall, all of which have
new passed completely into oblivion or
remain only a memory. During all this
time Darlington's has gene steadily
along, holding its trade from generation
te generation, adhering constantly te
its foundation policy of selling depend
able goods at the lowest possible price.
In 1918 the business was incorporated
and since that time our volume of sales
and number of patrons have increased
rapidly as mere and mere people found
out the advantages of trading here.
And New the Time Has Come for Anether Progressive Move
VVI EREALIZE fully that notwithstanding the We have the courage te discontinue some
f "glorious traditions" back of us that we can- profitable departments amounting in annual sales
glorious traditions eacic or us mac we can
not continue te grew and prosper without
constantly having a better store, keeping fully
apace with the times and making changes when
changes are necessary.
We have here an OLD STORE WITH A
NEW SPIRIT!
We have faith in the future and believe that
1 922 is a year of premise!
profitable departments amounting in annual sales
te several hundreds of thousands of dollars in order
that we may have "room for greater expansion
along ether lines which we believe offer a better
opportunity for serving mere people advantage
ously and making possible a bigger, mere helpful
store.
; Te this end, therefore, we announce that
throughout the month of January we shall have:
A REBUILDING SALE
Which Will Bring Yeu Unprecedented Opportunities for Meney-Saving
Extensive changes will be made in our store
building. Already carpenters, electricians and
ether mechanics are working in double shifts en
the alterations. The location of several depart
ments will be changed. New fixtures must be
installed in many places.
Fer us it will be a busy month, somewhat of a
chaotic month, because changes se radical as we
have planned cannot be made without consider
able confusion. In se far as possible this work will
be done at night and every effort made te reduce
shopping inconvenience te a minimum. Yeu must
be prepared, however, te find a temporary conges
tion and dis-arrangement in some sections, but
these draw-backs will be mere than off -set by the.
buying opportunities which will await you.
Net all of the reduced-price groups will be
available tomerrpw further announcements
will be made daily, but the following lines, none
of which we shall carry in the future, will be
ready. The Sale will continue until all of these
stocks are sold out, but first choice will be best
choice, se come as early as possible.
