VOTERS' LEAGUE
CASH NEARLY GONE
But Organization Will Continue
Fight for Geed Government,
Officials Say
The Voters' Lcague treasury i vir
tually empty, but its officials say the
league Kill continue the fight for geed
government, nnd that reorganization
plans are being considered.
Edward J. Hunter, executive secre
tary, resigned that effice Saturday and
has returned te newspaper work. He
would maku no comment tedny en the
league's financial condition.
Frank M. Klter, newly elected chair
man of the league,, today minimized re
ports of financial difficulties. He de
clared the league is growing ttrengcr
every day, and that its backers have
no thought of giving up the civic cam
paign It inaugurated last June.
The first clash in the political arena
the new Independent organization had
was nt the September primary. All its
candidates for Republican nominations
were defeated by Combine men. Tens
of thousands of "stay-at-homes' by
their indifference, helped the Combine
te victory.
The Voters' League was organized
.Tunc 23 last, when officers nnd a beard
of managers were chosen and a consti
tution was approved. Arthur H. Lea
was one of the leaders In the move
ment. He recently resigned the chair
manship. Invitations sent te citizens at the
Hme of its organization stated the league
was designed te "guard and promote the
interests of the citizens of Philadel
phia in the improvement nnd enforce
ment of laws, in the administration of
the city nnd county governments and in
the nomination and election of candi
dates for public office."
Headquarters were opened July 2, nt
224 Seuth Iireml street. League of
ficials nre new considering whether te
give hji tlu hcndiiunrtcrs. It is believed
the principal members will meet nnd
decide en n future course of action.
Frnnklln Spencer Edmonds, who took
a prominent part in the organization of
the league, when asked whether It
would dissolve for lack of funds, said:
"It leeks very much the ether wny.
We have just elected n new president.
My feeling Is strongly the ether wny."
Themas Ilacburn White wnB even
mere sure that there Is n bright future
ahead of the league. "Certainly we
are going te continue," he said, em
phatically. "Are your funds net very low?" he
was asked.
"Funds for public movements nre al
ways low," he replied. "Hut wc nrc
abundantly provided for in the matter
of funds for the future."
Ocergc D. Perter, former Director of
Public Safety, snld: "There Is net the
slightest reason In the world for any
rumors that the Voters' League .will
suspend. Meney is the least of our
worries."
