time when I saw the billboards an
nouncing his Bong recital. They were
out in front of Witherspoon Hall, if
I'm' not mistaken. And I remember
thinking then that any young man who
waa trying to enter the field of high
claaa music in this patriotic country
with each an American name as John
Charles Thomaa waa picking out just
about the hardest and most uphill road
to set there. But John Charles stuck.
,And he's there.
Wonder where he'd be now if he
bad followed the usual custom and
killed himself then as Diego Carlos
Tomaii, as any other loyal American
alnger would have done.
As a matter of fact, John Charles
waa born in Baltimore. That inn't
anything against him. Several very
nice people have been born in Balti
more. He was graduated from the
Feabody Conservatory. Severnl very
alee people have come from there, too
John Charles was soloist in three or
fonr of the best churches in tho city
where the soft-shell crabs come from
and then he decided there would be
raore money in comic opera, if he could
only get into It somehow. So he 'eft
Baltimore left it flat
And oddly enough this young church
choir elnger got his first job in New
Tork playing "Passion" in "Every-
woman." Now I ask you !
Then came a strenuous season at the
"Winter Garden in "The Pasbing Show
of 1013" in which he played n black-
'araoor, a policeman and an Indian
Then n Beason In "The Peasant Olrl"
and back to the Winter finrden
"Alone at Last," "Her Soldier Bot"
and an all-star revival of "The High
wayman" saw the young singer ad
vancing steadily until he was finally
established in a leading role in "May
time," in which ho played for eighteen
nonins,
This was followed by two vears In
"Apple Blossoms" and now "The Love
