COTTON YARNS HIGHER
Users Not Inclined to Come Into the
Market Few Actual Orders
Wlillo prices for cotton jams hnvo
stiffened, users hnvo not been Inclined
to come Into the market, says the weekly
rovlew of trndo for the Philadelphia dis
trict by It. O, Dun & Oo. There has
been n larger Inquiry, although few nc
tual orders. Many of the mills nre In
close touch with locnl dealers, but only
to keep Informed of dally price condi
tions. .
Textile conditions show no marked
Improvement, while a number In opera
tion are working to a small per cent of
capacity.
Wholesalers ad jobbers of dry goods
report conditions normal, with n satis
factory opening up of foil business. Col
lections are slow.
Tho review, continuing, goes on to
say:
"Tho hardware line shows little
change. While there Is a fair amount
of biiKlnc", purchases arc in small
quantities and con lined largely to Im
mediate need.. The volume of busi
ness Ih less thnn for the same period
of 1020. OillcctloiiH nre nlow,
"The electrical trade rciwrts a good
business In household specialties and In
creased activity in building operation
work with anticipation of better vol
ume as the fall season opens, Electric
wiring for now houses is quiet, nltliough
some work Is reported along repair lines
"The stovo trade anticipates an im
provement in the autumn, owing to u
gradual Increase In building, I'dces on
gas stoves hnvo been reduced and arc
retorted now 20 per centclicaper thnn
last year. In coal ranges prices have
been cut lfi per cent, but there is lit
tle demand. Most of the work is on
repairs.
"Tho leather market continues dull.
Prices nre steady. Farmers are again
buying hides nnd n better sentiment ex
ists In the market than for some time.
Glazed kid manufacturers nre doing n
substantial business. The demand con
tinues for color and better grades, but
good blzed orders for medium and lower
grades nre in hand. Shoe dealers state
the demand Is for fancy oxfords, while
high shoes are not selling. Purchases
are In small amounts and there Is no
evidence of n established style for fall
trnde. Staple goods are In small de
mnnd. Collections nre fair.
"The paper market shows little
change. Manufacturers nnd jobbers re
port littlo buying except far immediate
needs, nnd prices nre declining.
"Paint manufacturers, dealers In
paints nnd pnlnters' supplies report
business quiet. Purchnscs nre in mod
erate quantities and for immediate needs.
It is believed that there will be a mod
erate Increase in business during the
fall. There is a slight reduction in prices
and collections are slow.
"Tho wallpaper line shows but little
change. While manufacturers are so
liciting business throughout the country,
the mnjority of the factories are Idle,
due principally to labor conditions. Im
provement in this line Is anticipated
during the fall.
"The wholesale tobacco trade con
tinues dull and while a few inquiries nre
being mnde for old grades of Pennsyl
vania and Connecticut, the transactions
nre light. Other tobaccos nre selling
In Kinnll quantities for Immedlnte lives
nnd high prices generally rule.
"The large cigar manufacturers re
port it moderate business, but it is not
In normal condition nnd the smnller
manufacturers are not making much, if
anything, above a living. The local
retail trade Is in fnlr conditions but
dealers have been cutting prices and
competition is generally keen."

Tendency In Home Ralls
)ondon, Hept. ii. A more confident
feeling prevailed on the stock exchange
today with the oil shares the strong
feature as a result of active profes
sional operations. Shell Trnnsport nnd
Trading was quoted nt (5 und Mexican
Kngle at 5 1-10. Ollt-cdgcd securities
were Irregular, but there was a more
cheerful feeling because of the monetary
ease.
An easier tendency was shown In
home rails, which were neglected. Dol
lar descriptions continued dull. A re
vival of dividend hopes caused buojancy
in Argentine rails. French loans were
firmer on buying by Paris, while kalfirs
Incked stendiness and were tenderness.
Although (he market for tho rubbers
was dull, the undertone continued
stendy. Other industrials were slightly
firmer with more nctlvo trading, Hud
