To 1 he Editor ot the Evening J'tiblle Ledoert
Sir Please explain to me tho meaning
of the expression, "Good wine need, no

Philadelphia, August 2, 1021.
The bush formerly hung out at the doors
of taverns wag always Ivy, probably In al
lusion to Bacchus, to whom the Ivy bush
was sacred. The old poet, and dramatist,
have many allusions to the custom ot hang
ing out a bush a.i "Things of greatest profit
are set forth with least prloe. When the
wine I. neat there needeth no lvto bush,"
and a. alnt
"I hang no Ivle out to sell my wine,
The neetnr of good wit. will sell Itselfe."
The proverb mean, that when the wine

From Ood' a temple., fine and old.
At the height of all their revelry,

A hand cam forth against th wall.
And slowly movod along.

"Little Brown Cot on the Hill"
To the Editor of the Vuollc Ledger:
sir I wilt appreciate It very much If you
will print In your "Public's Forum" Sunday
the word, of the old song "Th Little Brown
Cot on the Hill." MABY T. PBICH.
Philadelphia, August a. isi.
THE LITTLE BROWN COT ON THE HILL
I remember the little brown cot on the hill.
Whero I lived In th sweet long agoi
And the musical sound of the murmuring rill.
That beside th brown cot usoa to now.
Though to other, no beauty In It might
appear.
That ebuld wak in their bo.om a thrill I
Yet thero'. nothing on earth to my heart
that'. o dear,
As the lltU brown cot on the hill.
CHORUS
It wa. lonely and old, and In Winter wa.
drear.
And the winds could assail It at will!
Yet there", nothing on earth to my heart
quite so dear,
A. the little brown cot on th hill.
Long ago In the little brown cot I wa. born.
And there passed my boyhood away:
On the porch I would .It from th first flush
ot morn, .
Till th close of the long summer's day.
Or I'd play In th cool, shady wood, that
were near.
And my laugh would be merry and shrill.
Till fatigued I'd return to my mother eo
dear.
In the little brown cot on the hill.
It 1. year, since 1 parted from my friends
at I tn door
And loft them to wander away.
And I sigh when I think that I'll eee them no
more.
For they sleep In the churchyard today.
Tot although In this world I'll not meet them
again.
I can cherish these memories still.
And affection forever with me will remain,
For the little brown cot on the hill.
