Nrw York. Aus. 10. Today's "tool:
market seemingly labored under the
mmo dcprpxlii(j Influence o the fear
of some overhanging; trouble. For sev
ernl ilay there has been vague hlnta
or tni Impending tiinturDnnce, tmt no
one appears to have boon able to dls
rover Its nature. Tho apprehension on
this Kooro was to some extent Intensified
perhaps by the reappearance of liqui
dating pressure In many quarters, em
bracing tho Investment as well as the
speculative Issues.
Effort nj made to create tho Impres
sion that the greater amount of pres
sure emanated from the professional
bear speculators, but as the session pro
gressed It was obvious even to the ln
oxperlenced layman there was connld
ernble nioro balden mero chart selling
to cause almost an uninterrupted melt
ing of prices. Furthermore, the sharp
declines in number of instances gate
convincing tet.tlmony of tho rearliins.'
and uncovering numerous stop-los
orders.
While every one was straining; their
eyes an.) cars to catch the first sign or
signal of the mysterious" unveiled diffi
cult), II is an ojxm scciet theve Is still
some invn'ved situation growing of
frozen bank loans In connection with
tho foreigu trade operations, particu
larly in Cuba and South American
countries, that nwnit further adjust
ments. In truth, It wns Intimated in
well-Informed circles that u foreign
cxchniuo institution recently given as
sistance whs again flying the danger
flag, and It would require approximately
SSO.000.OOO to adjust current pressing
claims.
In addition to the unsettling effect
of the above undetermined situation
other depressing factors were to be
found in the announcement of further
cut in oil prices; the lumvntnbl.i pour
nnnual statement of the Atlantic 5nlf
and Wont Indies Corporation, and th
largest indicated shrinknge In the crop
yields. On the other hand, the T'. S.
Steel Corporation's monthly unfilled
tonungo statement proved a p'easan
surprise, disclosing a shrinkage of 17.
544 tons, or 1(10,000 tons less than had
been generally estimated. 'Whatever
good influence this might have had t
galvanize new life Into the flagging
bullish speculation wns entirely lost bv
the declaration of prominent steel In
terests that the steel industry was in
n worke condition thai- anv time since
1S01. Even then, ho said, everybody
was doing a little, while tudaj there Is
nothing being done.
The market started out in tho name
Fpirltlws fashion that has distinguished
it of late with a trend lower. Prices
broke with some severity In the later
dealings. Mexican Petroleum and New
Xork Shipbuilding loi-ing about 4 points.
Prices having recently demonstrated
their Inability to rise, traders sold the
general list freely, the possibilities of
tlie bear side being more promising for
tho moment. Equipments, motors,
shippings, steals, sugars and railroad
tocks showed little support. General
Electric dropped 2 points to a new low
level for the year and South Porto Rico
Sugar 5 points. Losses of 1 to 1
points were well distributed throughout
tho list. In the meantime call money
held at 0 per cent, with the Govern
ment announcing that $10,000,000
would be withdrawn from local insti
tutions tomorrow.
