Tno.o ndvooatlnc- the punning theory ar

manner, ta truo. after all the hor.e pulla

"At Slxco or Sevens"
To tht Editor of the Hvfnlna Publio L-'daer:
Blr What s the origin of the expression
"at sires or sevens?" J. L. S.
Philadelphia, August 2, 1021.
Many speculations as to tho origin of this
phraso have boon made. Bhakonpeare and
Hacon used It, aa did also Arbuthnot and
Swift. Bomo havo thought that it was an
allusion to Job's troubles (Job v. 10): others
think It connected In some way with tho
six working dsyn out of tho sevon In a
week. Nares euggostn that It was originally
taken from tho ganra of backgammon. In
which to leave slnsle men exposed to tho
throws of sixes and sevens Is to leave them
under tho greatest haiard, slnco thero are
more chances for throwing those numbers
than for any other;

drawn from the center of the ooUgon to Its

In the leoeelos trlanglo found by ono side

Origin of Word "Spinster"
To the Editor of the Evening Pufcllo Ltdaer:
Sir -What Is the origin of the word
".plaster," frequently applied to unmarried
women? Has It a derisive or disrespectful
meaning? M. W. F.
Philadelphia, August 2, 1021.
"Spinster" Is a form or variation of
"spinner," one who spins, meaning an un
married woman, who was supposed to oc
cupy her tlm. spinning. In It. prlmltlvo
form and meaning th word la of early
Anglo-Saxon origin, when no young woman
was thought fit to bo a wife till she had
.pun for herself an outllt of porsonal, table
and bed llnom henca spinner, or spinster.
The fine and saorcd word wife (Saxon wlf)
has a somewhat similar origin In tho Baxon
verb, wyfan or wefnn. to woave, the woavoi
lining the natural euccosaor of tho .plnnar.
There was nothing derisive In tho term
spinster, nnd it still Is used in legal docu
ments to dcslgnato an unmarried woman.
