would account more thun nnythlns ele
for the unsatisfactory condition of to
day's stock market. The tone was
rather henry, but It was obvlout. selllnR
orderi did not follow up the declines.
On the other hand, nt different Intervals
stocks, including the better grade, were
conspicuously on tap. There was good
absorption, however, a siizife'ted lu the
relatively slight net declines.
From the very outlet the general be
havior of the list Indicated something
was overhanging the mnrket, regarding
which there wa lnrk of definite In
formation. About the only adverse de
velopment to come to the surface was
the announcement of the suspension of
n Uoton brokerage firm, which was
suld not to be very important Specu
lative Interest on the long side was
conspicuously lacking, which the bear
contingent were quite ready to take
advantage of, nnd was employed as nn
excuse for driving prices down sharply
in mnny directions.
The entire list felt the lack of p.n

time continued liberal prollt -Inking in
the rails caused that division to fall
away steadily, with the dividend and
low-priced shares showing about the
same relative amount of weakness.
It was the weakness of the rail group
In the curly dealings that undermined
the Industrial". The scope of the sell-
p ing movement wns extended during the
j first part of the morning to embrace all
I classes of the latter, with the oils,
I equipments, gas, copper and fooil issues
the weakest. Forced liquidation in
many of the named groups indicated
I the cleaning-up process was still not
I yet completed. A feature In this con
I nectiou was tho heavy selling of Invin
cible Oil which dropped .'l points to a
new low record nt (!. Houston Oil was
also hnrd pressed, breaking 4 points.
Declines of 1 to - points were numer
ous in other specialties. There was,
however, n steady diminishing of the
dealings after the first hour nnd before
midday the market was near coming to
a complete standstill.

Drooping prices nnd diminishing
dealings appeared to he contnglous as
a mild attack wns nlso suffered bv the
local market. With exceptions of Penn
sylvania Railroad transactions wen1 of
a diminutive order. The clipping back
of quotations, however, was only
blcnifirnnt in that tended to emphasize
the thin chnrncter of the market when
left to Its own resources. No better
Illustration In this connection could be
offered than In the case of I'lectrlc
Storago Untterj. After the remnrlcable
display of strength in the four pre
ceding days, the offering of a relatively
small amount or stock caused nn over
night reaction of 2 points to 107. or
nearly Sty jiolnts from the top price
of the week.
Narrowness of the market, or nt least
the plucky of buying demand whs nt
the same time exemplified In the point
reaction in Pennsylvania Kiilroad. with
that stock fulling back to rtT . or nearly
- point under the week's bet iirire.
'Ihe decision of the management re'ativc
to the manner of emplojes voting W
I awaited with consldet able Interest. It
I is understood some of the stronger In
terests in the ceninnn totv at first
I disposed to vigorously contest the ruling
I of the Itnllrond Labor Hoard. After
more careful deliberation it was deemed
iinnis- to ihviinf Mich an attitude and
cooler Heads sunrjestfil a more con
ciliator) polir. It i one of the hardest
nutf the management has been called on
to crack, nnd natural! there is going
i bo u whole lot of thinking nnd mik
ing bofore the final decision is reached.
The two ordinances introduced In
City Council yesterday looking to af
fording the I . G. I. Compnny some
relief wns without effect on that stock.
There still remains the general atti
tude of marking time until something
more definite is agreed upon. The con
testing political influences injected into'
tne question makes its outlook very con
fusing.
