Co'ds-You-Plcasa. Tourist Doesn't Want Return of American
Plan, Say Managers Here Eat Anyivhcre Popular Idea
The KO-ns-j-ou-1ens5 Anicrlrnn hns
made return of the so-called Ameri
can hotel pi nn Impossible, cay hotel
men of this city In answer to the
prediction of the American Hotel As
sociation, In convention at Chicago,
that a return to the old plan Is likely
in the near future
"Nothing doing, " was the universal
comment in this city, Tho American
plan, and every other plan, has been
superseded by no plan at all. "Wc
should be bothered," they say, 'would
really most accurately designate tho
S resent plan. "Living to cat" has
ecil superseded by "I would rather
sleep than cat." "Let's slip In hero
for n bite" Is the mental attitude of
today. Is the way they sum the sltua
tlo" up.
"Tho American today who patronizes
hotels goes on the go-as-you-please
basts," said Charles Pike, assistant
manager of the Hotel Vendlg. "The
peal ot the dinner bell has no appeal to
him, neither does It arouse him to ac
tion. He Is generally novrr around
to hear it. Father Is busy putting over
deals and the rest ot the family could
see a movlo or takq n spin in the car
while waiting for the bell to ring. At
any rate, they don't alwajs patronize
the hotels where they ore stopping when
"There Is too mich food wasted ami
not enougn consumea to mane mo
Amerlcnn plan fcaslblo," said O. V.
Cleaver, assistant manager of the Hotel
Adclphla. "That method may be all right
at tho seashore where eating furnishes
an important part of the vacationists
entertainment, but here things nrc dif
ferent. The diner hero does not want
to be bothered with meals, except when
he wants to be. Ro eating and sleeping
naturally become separate matters.
There is certainly no thought of re
turning to the old plan in tho Kast."
"Wo have given the matter no
thought," said II. L. Turner, assistant
manager of the Hotel Hanover. "How
ever, the Pennsylvania State Hotel As
sociation meets in October and it
mav take the matter up."
Members of the national body hold
that the American plan provides the
guests with a better balinccd menu,
