ALL TO BOX IN PHILA.
By ItOUIS II. JAFFE
With do many contenders looming
froniiscuously in the path of Ucnn)
.connrd, competition in the lightweight
division is nbout, the most interesting
of any of tho different classes in fistioun.
Leonard is a rtal champion he doesn't
bar any one, is ready to box any urn
promoters care to choose for him. nnd
when he steps Into the ring tho party of
the second part and the audience al
ways arc premised all sorts of action.
.lust now Benny's crown is resting
solidly on his wcll-conilied locks, but
uftcr August 12 his dindcra may be
loosened a bit. Then, nenin. it may not.
There are many fans who believe that
Itcw Tenrtler will prove himself n mm
gerous man for the champion, but there
ore many more who believe thut the
southpaw is a perfectly good boxer, all
right, but hasn t n chance of dethroning
tho natty New Yorker. That nil re
mains to be seen.
In the meantime, Philadelphia's fistic
fraternity Is to get a glimpse of several
other tistmen who nro awaiting oppor
tunities to muss up Leonard's hair and,
Incidentally, try to knock his block off.
Of these, Johnny Dundee already has
had almost half a dozen chances to
slam Benny for a goal, but he couldn't
slip over tho wallop. At that, Dundee
never could be arrested for displaiug a
knockout punch. Still his cleverness on
one or two occasions enabled him to
hold Leonard to a draw or give him 11
victory on points, in the opinion of
several critics.
Others in Line
Then there are Willie Jackson, an
other New Yorker, and (ieorgc l'hane.
the terrific sockcr, of Baltimore, and
Jimmy Hanlon, of Denver, too. llaulon
recently came out of the West. and. with
the exception of his brilliant battle
against Jackson in New York scvcrul
weeks ago. nothing is known of his
cnliber to place him In the first flight
for a shot at Leonard's laurels. But
Jimmy odmitB he has the stuff.
Jackson and Chaney have been
dubious until now about chancing their
respective chins In the same ring with
the tltlcholder. Willie nlways hab
quibbled about weight. Insisting on 133
pounds, while Georgie jusA- "Rurally
didn't care a whole lot abaft facing
Ben. However, both Jackson and
Chaney ore looking at a match with
Leonard from u different standpoint
now.
The recognized lightweight limit, 135
pounds, to weigh in eight hours before
the contest, is perfectly satisfactory to
Jackson, and here's what Chaney hud
to say tho last time he was In Phila
delphia: "For sonic reason or other I never
wanted to meet Leonard. In the first
placo I thought ho was entirely too big,
and then again probably because 1
thought I couldn't keep my jaw away
from his right. However, since that
bout bctwean Leonard and Rocky Kan
sas, In which the latter showed well
against Benny, I havo decided that it
wouldn't be such an easy battle for Mr.
Leonard. Yes, I would bo him, if
Sammy Harria said tho match was on."
Hero Tomorrow
This quartet of lightweights Jack
son, Hanlon, Chaney and Dundee are
oxpected in Philadelphia tomorrow
night. They are coming hero for a pur
pose for the express purpose of trying
to punch each other for a row of barns.
Jackson Is paired with Hanlon anil
Chaney is to meet Dundee.
These matches, each eight-rounders,
will bo decided at Shibe Pnrk tomorrow
night. There are to be two other eight
round encounters Danny FrC.h of
Bnltimoro, vs. Billy Do Foe, of St.
Paul, and Johnny Murray, of Now
York. vs. Frankie Rice, of Baltimore.
Another set-to, which is to be a six
round muss, will be tho ppenlng contest,
in which Joo Jackson will try to bock
Jimmy Hulllvan over tho left-field wall.

OGG IS SHAWNEE WINNER
By SANDY McNIBLICK
Slinwiico- oil Delaware, Pa.. July 10.
The annual Shawnee open champion
ship,' which nunc to nn end here yester.
day when Wllllo Ogg, of Worcester.
Mnss., romped in three stroUcn ahead of
his nearest competitors with a total of
20S strokes for tho seventy -two holes,
is both disturbing nnd comforting to
those who wish to sec the open cham
pionship of the United States stay on
this side of the water.
First, both Duncan nnd Mitchell
proved by their showing that they can
be very very bad at times, but at other
times can raise their games to supreme
heights. Duncan went nil to pieces on
this second eighteen holes, nnd so did
Mitchell, but then the pair of them
pulled themselves together and mode a
wonderful finish yesterday, particularly
Duncan with his marvelous sixty-nine,
which put him in a tie for second place.
Second, all those who saw Joo Kirk
wood, tho Australian open champion,
going better with every round until he
finally finished with n seventy-one after
a display of the most sound and con
sistent golf, realize that this towheaded
youngster will tuko a lot of beating in
nny old tournament. In short, Dun
con, Mitchell nnd Kirkwood arc n for
midable trio In the open championship.
Tho Philndelphlans, while they did
not get In the moiie., kept the district
wclrip in front for three rounds.
Chnrlie Iloffner gave a display of steady
golf by achieving three straight seventy
sixes, after which that habit of taking
one bad round ruined him. Willie Leneli
also fell into tho eighties on the second
thirty-six holes,, and passed right out
of the picture.
The two Udmundsons, John and Jack,
tho former of Llnnerch, luid the latter
of North Hills, stuck to the bitter cud,
and had they been able to get nway to
a better start on the first two rounds,
would have finished somewhere cither
in the money or cloe to it. Jack had
n total of 320, while John was eight
strokes more.
Bob Bnrnctt, of Tredyffrin, was un
able to sole the rain-soaked course the
second day and with eighty-nine and
eighty -five pulled up close to the tall
end with IKMI.
