AN AIMLESS DRIF
T
Further Stunts In Mexican
Pete Steols and Motors
Conspicuously Heavy
New York, Julr 14. Todny's stock
market continued to drift in much the
Mime aimless fashion ns noted In the
recent pcsslons. Tho tradtnc remained
entirely in tho hand of the profes
Monnl speculators, and In brief was a
traders' gnmc liro and simple. Ac
tivity was confined to a croup of less
than a dozen shares in which upeeula
tire interest has recently been con
centrated. Tho oils were again tho
more prominent features, but the
motors, equipments and tccl 'were nlno
conspicuous by reason df their hcwi
now. Overnight developments furnished
little in tho way nf novelty and failed,
to reflect any essential change in sen
ernl conditions. About the only livo
bit of news was an unofficial and un
confirmed rumor that the Mexican Gov
ernment had revoked tho extra export
tax on petroleum production. This
caused another flurry in Mexican Pe
troleum in the early trading, carrying
that speculative football up over a point
to 1081, but after twisting the shorts
the stock fell back with the rest of tho
market.
As to the general llt the effect of
thin individual demonstration wan
counterbalanced by tho pronounced
heaviness of the motor and Independent
Htecl bliarcs. Ilcfore the market wan
an hour old, however, virtually all
the industrial stocks wcro slipping back,
but tho entiro list plainly Indicated tho
lack of concerted buying power. Tho
softness of the steal group was scaslly
explained In tho coutinuod unsatisfac
tory reports concerning that Industry,
which was perhaps further accentuated
by the unfavorable quarterly report of
the Lackawanna Steel Co. Tho re
current sinking spell in the motor group,
with Chandler breaking iuto now low
ground, was likewise chargeable to poor
earnings. The tobacco group were quite
firm, but the most of tho sugar shares
on tho othor hand Httll proved to bo
suscoptlblo to pressure.
By reason of the overwhelming pro
fessional caste of tho trading, the back
ing and filling of prices contained little
significance. While the market lacked
stability, there? was a noticeable absence
of aggressiveness on tho part of tho
reactionary crowd, indicating n gen
eral reluctance to make very large ex
tension of short commitments In visw
of the diminishing dealings. Much the
(saino as yesterday, the bulk of the
transactions represented merely the
xcnlplng operations of the room-trading
contingent. This wan corroborated
in the pronounced contraction in the
dunlings which accompanied the rever
sal movement following the mixed open

There was little more business In the
local market today, but price movemant
wits narrow and price changes incon
sequential. Trading altogether was
rather lifeless, reflecting a strict ad
herence to the waiting policy. The in
dolent charncter of the market, how
ever, was in line with the season, but
the Indisposition to extend old or make
new commitments la intensified just nt
this time by reason of the existing gen
eral uncertainty.
The lecnl utility group showed more
action tnan oDserved lor some few days,
with quotations also better sustained.
Pennsylvania Railroad was firmer, re
flecting the withdrawal of moderate
liquidating pressure; roocntly witnessed.
It Is Understood tho directors will meot
