the Spntks home and occupying con.
iderable of Kathryn's time. When
she did ronllzo whnt It incrtht Mrs.
Sparks felt jubilant nt first, believing n
way1 out of ,tho flnnnclnl dilemma in
which she found herself hnd been
opened. If Knthryn would marry Mr,
Gordon tho Sparks fnmlly would bo oa
onsy street.
It inntlo no difference, at first, thnt
Knthryn was only nineteen while
Nnthnn was forty. Ho did not look
more than thirty, nnd might have
pnssed for thnt, only Mrs. 8parkt re
membered n school birthday party long
ngo In which Nathnn nnd alio hnd been
the principal figures becnusc their nn
tilvcrsaries enmo on the snmo day, al
though he wns three years, her cider.
Frances, in her younger days, had been
n bright pupil nnd forged nlirnd of
others of her own ngc.
When love enmc to be considered.
Mrs. Sparks was skeptical. She did
not say there wns no such thing ns
love, but she was rather inclined to the
view that mnrringo wns n businoMt
partnership. Knthryn's father had been
killed in n rnllrond wreck in the West
nfter leaving his wife and bnby during
ono of the periodical domestic disagree
ments to which the Sparks household
hnd grown accustomed. Fortunntely,
his life hnd been well insured nnd thus
the wlow nnd her child hnd been nblc
to keep the wolf a snfe dlstunco from
the door.
Then suddenly ono dny Mrs, Sparks
came to herself. Could such n mnrringo
bo n happy one? Could a girl of nine
teen settle down with n man of another
generation? Could his wealth possibly
atone for the wide difference in their
nges? She recalled tho t.ong, which told
of a girl's beauty being "sold for un
old man's gold, nnd It made her
afraid. What hnd she been thinking of?
She must Interfere.
But how could sho interfere? Ccr
tnlnly it would not be quite right for
her to tnkc the matter up with Knth
ryn nfter she had permitted the affair
to go thin fur, yes nnd even encouraged
it with her reticence It would be un
diplomatic, too, for such interference
usunlly defents Its own aims. But
Knthryn's beauty must not bu "sold for
nu old man's gold," If there wns any
wny to avoid it. Nathan wns not an
old man by nny means, from Mrs,
Spnrk's viewpoint, but In contrast with
her daughter lie was.
As Mrs. Sparks thus cngltntcd she
looked out of the wrndow of her bed
room and saw Nathnn Gordon get out
of his rondstcr nnd stnrt up the walk
to tho lioube. He progressed with n
determined gait, nnd bomething told'
Frances thnt the crisis wns nt hnnd.
This wns substantiated presently when
she henid Mr. Gordon dnumtnirx nsk
ing for "your mother." Inasmuch n
Knthrjn wns the person addressed,
Frances wns the ono nought.
"I believe she.'s upsrntrs, but she may
have gone out," she heatd Knthryn
mi. "I'll go up nnd bee."
"He's coming to nsk permission to
marry Knthryn." Mrs. Sparks told her
self. "I must postpone it until I hnve
time to think n wny out of the iiipss."
She slipped into n jnrget nnd hur
ried down the linll to the bnrk stnir-
wny. Descending, she hastened out to j
the gnrnge nnd presently emerged driv
ing the Sparks family motor. At n
fast pace she drove out into the street
nifd nwny.
Nature is n good person to consult
when problems nrise, and Mrs. Sparks
drovo into the country. Her mind no- I

she hnppcned to glnnce bnckwnrd nnd
