ter who serves In the kitchen. Only
five girls of the utagc passed through
the gntcs of the institution during that
period.
Domestics were a few hundred time's

change her address to Holmcsburg in
the year 1020.
Figures obtained from the House of
Correction for the yenr show further
hlghwntcr marks in humble callings.
Forty-five laundresses nnd seventeen
cooks swelled the figures of crime In
that time.
Socinl workers discussing these ligures
attribute the high' percentage among
general-housework girls and other do
mestics to loneliness.
Strangers of a Great City
The girls, It Is contended, frequently
come to the city as strangerH without
knowing which way to turn. Often
they nre victimized. Their misfortunes
arc further attributed to the hum
drtininess of nu occupation that uffords
so little variety nnd amusement.
In all, 027 feminine transgressors
were sent lo the Institution.'. Single
women were In "the majority. Ages
ranged from sixteen jears up.
Three telephone girls were included.
Six mill workers, twenty-six wnit
1 esses, one huir dresser, three nurses,
one bookkeeper, thirl en senmstresses.

two hosiery workers figured as well.

Mrs. Lena Roberts, head of the So
cial Service Deportment of the Depart
ment of Welfare, pointed to the signifi
cance of the high percentage of domes
tics who figured in the 1020 Holnu'sburg
record.
"It is evident the humdrum occupa
tions feed the ranks of offenders ti u
gienter extent thnn those where girls
nre ordinnrll) supposed to be exposed
to more temptation. " Mrs. Roberta said.
"One remedy for the situation would
be shorteV hours, but the l-egulntion of
this must come through the enactment
of InwM."
