Roslyn Youngster Shows Way

HAD MADE PLANS AHEAD
The shady, hard-packed roads around
Roslyn are going to have a frequent
visitor one of thene days.
IBs nnme is John T. Rrnushaw. and
he Is JiiRt "going on ten." John has a
sturdy pair of legs, but for several
years he has admitted n partiality to,
other forms of locomotion. Several of
his playmates had bicycles, nnd when
they felt generous John, who is little
but athletic, would climb aboard ond
take n little spin up the street.
But the boys like nil their kind
weren't always generous, nnd the spins
were all too short. So John decided he
would hove n "bike" himself so that he
wouldn't hove to borrow one from Tom,
Dick nnd Hnrry,
Along came the Lr.Donn Contest, and
John figured he could get the necessar.v
thirty-rive subscriptions to the live
ning, Morning and Sunday Pcnuo
IiKDOnn. which would cnnblc him to be
come possessor of one of those sleek
Black Beauties,
And John wns right! It took him
exactly one week nnd some persistent
trudging from door to door in Ills quiet,
pretty little town which lies just above
(ilenside. Then the thirty-five sub
scriptions and the 'bike" were his, and
John was supremely happy,
John has a brother with whom he has
promised to go shares with the prize
blevcle, and he is even agreeable to
giving his little sister on occasional
"treat." John has promised his mother
that lie will not ride on the roads she
considers dangerous because of automo
bile traffic, but he Is going to burn up
(he less trnvelcd ones next fall, he In
tends riding to school, but that's a long
wnv ahead, and ho doesn't want to
think about It.
In the meantime there are three
glorious months.

Benjamin was arraigned before Mag
istrate Oswald, and without tlie taking
of evidence from any of tlie witnei-scs,
was held without ball upon the state

of Mrs. Benjamin s injuries.

Shortly before Mrs. Benjamin re
turned from work Inst night Benjamin
appeared. He chased away some chil
dren pla.ving about, telling them he had
n sin prise for his wife. When she ap
proached. It is said, he walked up to
her and the argument commenced.
The tragedy wns a culmination of n
war romance which began In the au
tumn of 1017, when Benjamin, nn elec
tricinn In the navy, met Miss Matilda
Ilansrhl, according to information ob
tained by the police from hi r parents
They were married In December of that
year, aud after the vvnr. when the
husband was released from the service,
they begun housekecptug.
A brother of the wounded wife sulci
today that Benjamin and his wife hail
differences because of his failure to re
tain work, and. that she finally left
him a eur ago, to return to her parents'
home. She obtained employment to
support herself.
During the last two weeks Benin-
min either walked up nnd down In front
of the house, or rode past on a tncvcle
The glil and her family thought that
he wanted lo effect a recotu illatinn,
but lie made no effort to Miter the house
The weie puzzled over his action, lm
finally attributed It to bashfulness. In .
llevlng that he wanted to see his wife,
but was ushnmed to enter the house
In a statement, Inter obtained bv
Detective Belshaw, Benjamin said that
he was dispirited because he was out
of work, ond that he did not Intend to
shoot his wife, but lost his head waen
she quarreled with him.
