Ab Billy and Peggy gazed at the doz

least one person In the vll'age was
awake. This one pcroon was a girl who

In color. 8he looked llko a beautiful

I This girl was writhing on the ground
1 s if In distress.
I'Whut rnn hn the mntter witn ncrr
whispered reggy to Dllly. "I wish we
knew." As If in answer to the wish,
th elrl nnulrmprl about so they could
ee her hands and feet. And when they
aw, they knew what was the matter
she was a prisoner, tied by her hands
and feet to stakes driven In the ground.
"Oh. what can this mean?" whis
kered Peggy. "I wish we could find
out,"
And this wish, too. was granted, and
In a strange way. A slight noise drew
their eyes toward the fence that guarded
the village. On the tor of the shnrp
fence pickets was balanced a young
African. lie was not black like the
sleeping ravages, but chocolate-colored
llko the girl captive.
The young African looked around
cautiously. Ills sharp eyes saw the vil
lage was as'eep. They saw. too, the
?lrl struggling on the ground and rested
here. Then the youth dropped silently
from the fence, landing ou the Inside
of the village, lit crept quietly but
quickly among the huts nnd past the
sleeping savages until he came to the
captive.
She was startled when he touched her
boulder, but a warning signal made
ber hold back the scream of Joy that
came to her lips.
"Flower of the Forest, I have found
yon," whispered the chocolate youth.
"Youth of the Lion Heart, bow came
you here?" whispered the girl. "Do
you bring my father's warriors to res
cue me from Chief Mighty Spear, who
holds me captive?"
"Alas, no!" whispered the chocolate
youth. "Your father's warriors fled In
fear when Chief Mighty Spear raided
our village and carried you away. They
dared not come with too to rescue you,
so I have como alone,"
"Woe is me!'' whispered the captive.
"You aro only one against many. You
cannot set me free. This very day I
am to become the bride of Chief Mighty
Bpcar."
"That shall not be," whispered the
chocolate youth. ."I will slay this
cruel warrior who has made you cap
tive," Bay in this the chocolate youth sfop
ped toward a spear resting in the hands
of the sleeping chief. But before the
youth could touch tho spear, there
sounded through the village the roll of
a drum roll that quickly grew to a
roar, and that, like an alarm, brought
every savage blinking out of bis sleep.
But before the drum had given n
second beat, before tho savages could
wink their heavy eyes, the chocolate
youth had darted from beneath the awn
ing and had swung himself out of sight
Into the very tree in which Peggy,
Billy and Folly Wisher were hiding.
What happened then will be told tomorrow.
