mHE death of Mrs. Norman Jackson
J. up in Salem, Mass., last week, was a
great shock to her friends, and it is no
exaggeration to say that her friends
were legion. I know of few women who
were as greatly loved as Mrs. Jackson.
Bhe had gone up to Salem with Miss
Barah Drayton and Miss Harriet Dray
tea for the summer and was taken ill
with tonsillitis shortly after arriving
there and died on Friday. Mrs. Jackson
was always a leader and good worker
here. She was ono of tho most active
workers on the board of tho Hospital
for Epileptics. Her home was at 1000
Pine .street, and the Misses Drayton
lad been living with her there this last
year. The funeral was held in Salem
early this week.
A CERTAIN lady you know and I
know was introduced to a very dis
tinguished gentleman the other day, and
you really could not quite blame her
for being flattered when he remarked In
a complimentary tone: "I think I must
have seen you in oils, somewhere." The
only trouble was that ebe showed she
was pleased, and she told her sister-in-law
about it. Now auld sister-in-law.
while interested, thought it would do
no harm to take the lady down a bit,
and she said: "What did he think you
were, a sardine?" And to add to her
discomfiture, an appreclntlvo friend
Joined in and furthered the cure by
ayitjg: "I guess it was a nice way oT
M'llng you that you were n poor flshL-'
The only trouble about it all was that
the flattered one enjoyed the jokes
as much as those who made them, nnd
bow she bores every ono to death by
, telling the whole story.
