A" ")' tf EVENING PUBLIC LEDGER PHILADELPHIA. SATURDAY, MAY 28, 1921 - . I fe K ft Vi Vt MKET'S FUTURE HARD TO READ Satisfactory Progress Made in ' Readjustment of the Eco nomic Situation Wall Street ulnit up Un shutter ml took nn extra day off, in mltlition to the rutulnr Memorial Day observance. Tickers remained client and will con tinue motionless until Tuesday morning when buflnrM will be renittnctl ns uKunl. The (rlple holiday will afford nn ex cellent opportunity for a rnlm annlyi of the eltuntlon. Not only to review what lins transpired In the first mo months of the calendar yenr, but nlo to take perspective view of the possi bilities of the remaining seven months. The former task will not be difficult. 83 it In nlwnys ensy to look back, but In attempting to prognosticate the future, well, that is a horse of a dif ferent color. , ,. , . It would not be overstating facts or exaggerating conditions to say never per haps In the annals of the market world have potsibllitief of the future been so difficult to dlsclpher or Interpret. Most of all etabl!Mied rules and regulations arc virtually a little liort of beliiR ob solete In finding the measurements i ami rounding of the market. The fcitua tion is so heavily chnrned with ton illctine cros currents as to make pre dictions of little value. The reenn Btructlon. or readjustment, process 1ms been productive of increasingly strong eddies keeping the market In a lilghlr churned condition. so the trend of values hardly can be forecasted a n or two ahead of time. Until positive evidence is given show ing conclusively the completion of the deflation process, there would seem to be little hope of any permanent settled tendencv. The greatly improved finan cial position may be accepted ns an in dication of satisfactory progress in the credit deflation. This alone is ind -rated In the much stronger reecrye posl tion reached bv the Federal Kcserve banks. Money, however, is ! far away from eaBy street. Nor is it likely to reach this happy juncture go long as the hungry demand for fresh capital U manifested by corporations of all rlasscs. The credit situation, neverthe less, compared with this time a year ago is greatly Improved, Hut from n sentimental viewpoint this is offset by the general recognition of the Impera tive necessity of the business deflation continuing much longer before the situa tion can be restored to a healthy equi librium. Proof of this ultimatum has been, and will be still further sunplled. in dividend omissions and reduction. Not because they always want to. but became they really arc compelled to do ao. most of the corporation managers find it convenient to converge nil pos sible resources to meet urgent needs, ahlch requires temporary abandonment of dividend distributions. This does not mean to imply the gen eral situation has taken an adverse turn, on the contrary, rapid progress has been made during the first five months of the rnlendT year In correct ing the economic situation. Within the last six weeks many constructive de velopments have taken place all of which wrved to put additional strength in the fundamental situation. In most all di rections the. right step has been taken in the right directlou. Tossibly the out look is best described In the opening re marks of Judge Gary's speech. In which h said: "When taking the long view of the future, conclusions are easy to reach. Our resources arc so great, our facilities for carrying on affairs ao sat isfactory, we know that before us is the greatest prosperity this country has ever witnessed." It may taki some months bororo many of the proposed readjustment and many already instituted will be carried into full force, or before any benefits are de rived. The knowledge, howevrr. of their present and prospective operations is alone assuring, nnd while the future outlook nt the momeut may be some want foggy nnd clouded. It Is almost reasonably certain the end of the last five months of the jear. mnterial will be at linnd to tell a much different kind of talc than can be written now from the happenings of the first five months. DREAMLAND ADVENTURES Folly Wither IIY DADDY CHAPTER VI Chased by Esltlntos TjlSKIMOS came running to gather Lj nbout Peggy nnd Wily, nnd folly Wisher, tho goblin. They were as much' astonished to see the strnngc white children ns Peggy nnd Hilly were to find that the fast tlog team belonged to the Ksklmo chief. Hilly had thought the team n wishing gift. As for the goblin, he seemed to regard Hilly's fix ns the biggest kind of n joke. The Eskimos were not only sur prised to see the white children, but they were particularly amazed to see the white Polar bear fur that had grown on them. They thought Peggy, Hilly and folly Wisher were a strange kind of human nnlmnK "They nre witch folks." cried the dark-faced Kklmo chief, nnd all the I'sklmos drew nwny in fear. "They are witch folks ami they stole my dog team by magic. I will spear them nnd that will drive them nwny forever." The Ksklmo chief crawled into his hut to get his spear. Hilly saw thut something had to be done quickly. They inut tlee before the chief got buck. "Mush! Mush:" cried Hilly to the fat Eskimo dog team. The dogs sprang to their feet and, led by White Spot, dashed nway. An T.kimo tried to grab a rope thnt dangled from the sled, but Ullly swung his big whip and gave the Eskimo a lnsh on his leg that made him tumble back with a howl. O'lt on the snow plnin eped the dog tenm. Uehlnd in the Eskimo village was much excitement as the Kskimo-i harnessed up other dog tenuis with which to chase Peggy. Hilly nnd Folfo wisher. Soon they were in pursuit and n lively race was on. White Spot untl liU dogs had a good lend before the Eskimos got started. They kept tliix lead up for it long dis tance, but after awhile nillv noticed that the Evkimos were gaining. Tills wasn't strange, for White Spot's team had been lacing with tho Eskimo chil dren nnd the dogs were tired. The dogs in the village had been resting, nnd they went into the race fresh and tagcr. "We will be caught," whispered Hilly. "I wish we could find a place to hide." whispered Peggv. "Ho! Ho! Hoi"" laughed I'ollv Wisher, the goblin. "I'll grant thnt wlh." Folly Wisher begun to Mvay from side to side, which made the Hying sledge rock like a boat. "Stop thnt fooling! You will tippet us!" shouted Hilly. Folly Wisher' answer was n strong swing outward and over went the sledge, hurling them nil into the snow. The sledge, after tipping thent oft", swung back on its runners, and the dog tenm, freed from the load, sped on faster than ever. Now the children seemed to be in trouble indeed. The Eskimos were coming fast. They would be caught and spenred. Hut Peggy's wits were working. She noticed they had been half buried in u little snow hollow. Their white Polar bear coats were tho same color ns the snow, and looking nt Hilly she could scarcely tell which was fur nnd which was snow. That gave her an Idea. "We will bury our heads like ostriches," she whispered. "The Eskimos will not see our white conts in the snow and will pass us by." So that is just what they did. The buried their heads in the snow. Their fur-covered backs .stuck out. but wort just like the rest of the white surface. The Eskimos came rushing by. They hndn't noticed the tipping over of the sledge. They snw White Spot's team far ahead and never thought of such a thing as the escape of the children bj hiding "Mush! Mush!" cried the Eskimo chief waving his spear. "Mush ! Mush '." The dog teams swiftly swept past and no one suw the queer hump in the snow that were the bui-l;s of Peggy. Billy and Folly Wisher. The children kept their heads under the snow until they were sure the Eskimos were out of sight. Then they drew themselves out of the smothery whiteness. And when they drew them selves out. they found a surprise wait ing for them u rather pleasant sur prise, ns it turned out. What it was will be told in the next chapter.
